COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Anatomy & Physiology is a yearlong course that provides students an opportunity to explore the intricate and sophisticated relationship between structure and function in the human body. The course offers students an environment in which they may probe topics such as homeostasis, anatomical and physiological disorders, medical diagnosis and treatment, modern and past imaging techniques, biochemistry, cytology, histology, and survey of the remarkable array of body systems that comprise the human body. Laboratory activities reinforce concepts and principles presented in the course

GOALS: All students will…

  • understand the basic concepts and principles of Anatomy and Physiologyas defined by the Oklahoma Academic Standards.
  • develop the reading skills, vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and study habits essential for independent progress in science.
  • utilize various scientific techniques and technological skills in the studies of Life.
  • understand the nature and limitations of scientific knowledge.
  • Promote scientific literacy

KEYS TO SUCCESS:

  • Take good notes in class.
  • Study topics that are discussed in class.
  • Always ask questions; there is no need to sit and wonder. If you have a question it is highly likely that your fellow classmates have the same question and would also benefit from further discussion on the matter
  • Write down all due dates and directions given to you.
  • Always identify key concepts, and vocabulary terms from each topic we discuss. Then usethese concepts

and terms to answer test questions.

  • I am always available to help you. We build on the previous concepts, so don’t let us move onwithout

you. If you need extra help makearrangements to meet with me before school, after school or during my conference period.

  • Cheating is wrong! Do not cheat! If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero and your parents

will be contacted.

In order to provide an optimal learning environment students will be expected to exhibit appropriate classroom behavior. It is my hope, as your instructor, to foster respect by promoting zero tolerance for harassment of any form. Treat others with respect, this includes students, teachers, administrators, substitutes, and visitors.

COURSE SUPPLIES:

  • 3 ring binder(1.5 in or greater)
  • Loose leaf paper (lined)
  • Pencil and/or Pen of any color (every day); Red pens will be required for grading purposes
  • Composition notebook (to be used in labs)
  • Highlighters (recommended)

CLASS ATTENDANCE:

It is imperative you attend class every day. If for some reason you are unable to attend class, it is YOUR responsibility to pick up the make-up work from the assignment folders and get it in before the allotted time. You will be allotted one day per day missed to complete the missing assignments.

LAB WORK:

A major part of your learning in this class will occur through laboratory investigations. Safety procedures must be strictly followed during these controlled experiments. On occasion we will be working with caustic chemicals and materials that can potentially be dangerous if not handled with respect and caution. Horseplay or other inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. Lab time is a privilege and any can be lost if your behavior does not warrant your involvement

LATE WORK POLICY:

The timely completion of class assignments is imperative for progression through course material. I do NOT accept late work. Adequate time for completion of all assignments will be given either in class, as homework or a combination of both.

NOTEBOOK:

Throughout the year you will maintain a Anatomy and Physiologynotebook (a 3-ring binder) to document the various class assignments, laboratory extensions, exams and quizzes. You may also keep your class lecture notes in this notebook if you prefer that option over a separate spiral notebook. Therefore, it is very important that you bring it with you to class every day. You are welcome to store your binder in the provided class bookcase if you would prefer. At the end of each semester you will submit yourbinder for grading. The grade will be equivalent to a test score.

GRADING PROCEDURES:

1. All grading will be based on the district standard of 90%=A, 80%=B, 70%=C, 60%=D.

2. The semester grade will be calculated as follows: course work (including quizzes) – 40%, unit exams – 40%, labs-20%

TUTORING:

Tutoring: Any student whose grade is failing will be required to attend tutoring before or after school. I will be available Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:30 until 8 am and Monday and Wednesday evening until 4pm. In rare cases where there is a major conflict with the student’s schedule I am willing to negotiate other times and days via parent request.

COMMUNICATION:

Establishing open and continual lines of communication between parents, students and the classroom teacher is essential for student success. I will be using a variety of media to communicate throughout the semester including, Email, Remind, and phone calls, if needed, for each class.Parents, please specify on the class contract any and all methods of communication you would like to participate in.This year we will be using Remind which is a two-way communication application for all class exams, quizzes, and important class updates. I have attached an information sheet so that you will be able to get started. I welcome all students and parents to take advantage of the app. If your current contact information in the school system has changed, please update the information on the Communication form. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

CELL PHONE POLICY:

I have a no tolerance cell phone policy. During all lecture and labs cell phones are to be turned to silent and stored away. In your pocket or on your desk is NOT considered stored away. If you do NOT have a suitable place to store your phone during class, you are welcomed to use my provided storage area. In case of emergency during class a parent may contact the school or the student via the direct extension provided at the top of the syllabus.

GRAPHIC IMAGES:

At times during the course of study students will be exposed to graphic images and content. All content and images will be presented in a scientific matter and are necessary to provide the student with a comprehensive understanding of the human anatomy and its physiology.
