The “Isms”

Diverging Art Movements in 19th-20th Century Europe

In the mid 1800's, European art ceased its slow linear progression through realism and split off into many different movements. They paved the way for modern art, which follows almost no rules at all! These movements (dubbed "The Isms") start with Impressionism and cascade into a variety of different styles and techniques. You will research these styles, their origins and influences, and their characteristics to see how ideas linked and branched off one another.

1) Research

You will be assigned one “Ism” to research for this project. You will use Internet and research books to find examples from your art movement along with some specific information. You will need to find:

Name of Movement

Country/Area – area where movement started or was centralized

Dates of Strongest Influence- when the movement was most active

Medium/Media- what materials were most widely used

Major Artists – 3-5 artists who contributed to the movement

Purpose/Meaning- the whole point behind the art

Visual Characteristics- key traits that identify the artwork style

Influences- ideas, developments, or prior movements

2) Contribute to Database

Your research will be added to a class database organizing information from all of the art movements studied. We will use this in later assignments. I will show you how to input data in class.

3) Artwork

Think you could join the ranks of your artists? Create an original artwork in the style of your art movement, using appropriate media, subject matter, and technique.

4) Presentation

Share with us! Give an oral presentation of the information you’ve gathered about your art movement. You will also need to provide artwork examples (digital projections work best) and unveil your original artwork!

5) Discussion

As we finish this unit, we will have a class discussion looking at the database and determining connections between the different art movements. I will also show you how to conduct a query to make this easier.

6) Test Your Knowledge

Think you’ve got these “Isms” down? Prove it! You will complete using the database you helped create. In the first, conduct queries to find connections between the movements. In the second, I will give you a bunch of images and you have to determine which movement they belong to.
