ZONE REP’S REPORT

MAY 2011

The last few months have been very busy around the Clubs, Zone and State, with Horse Trials, BEDS, BEST Series, Zone Eliminations and State Championships.

The Zone calendar was so full and Easter so late, the only date we could come up with to run the Games, Flat and Musical Ride Zone Championships was Anzac Day – the Tuesday after Easter. Many thanks to Caroline Shirra our Zone Event Secretary for organising the day and Drysdale/Leopold Club for hosting the day and providing the great food! and all the volunteers; judges, stewards, pencillers etc. etc. without them the day wouldn’t happen.

Congratulation to all the riders, they were a credit to their clubs and Team Managers – many hours had obviously gone into preparation and training. Thanks again to Caroline for organising the composite team, and giving the riders the opportunity to be part of the day. Not only did they have a terrific day but also placed.

Congratulations to following Teams who will go on and represent their clubs and Zone at State on the 18th & 19th June at the State Championships at Bacchus Marsh.

Flat Teams

1st Drysdale/Leopold 2nd Barwon Valley, 3rd Drysdale/Leopold, 4th Ballarat

Reminder on the Saturday Barwon Zone will be expected to provide a couple of helpers – can be rotated between a number of people. On the Sunday the Games Teams each provide a Lane Steward – these have already been nominated on the Entry Form plus a helper – which can be shared around.

The State Horse Trials were held at Heytesbury on a cold and wet weekend (30th April / 1st May). Barwon Zone were well represented with 15 riders in Grade 1 and 15 riders in Grade 2 with some very pleasing results. Congratulations to the following riders:

Grade 1: 1st Lauren Hill – Corio Moorabool

2nd Damien Thornton – Barwon Valley

Grade 2A: 1st Alyssa Calaby - Barwon Valley

4th Lucinda Doodt - Ballarat

Grade 2B: 6th Edwina Sedgwick - Barwon Valley

Grade 2C: 3rd Bryoni Butler - Barwon Valley

Bawon Valley Team finished 2nd (1 point behind the winner) Well done!

At the last zone meeting we had a discussion on the PCAV State Workshop to be hosted by Barwon Zone; there was some difficulty in finding a club whose facility was suitable, available and had the members to help on the day with catering etc. etc. (Corio/Moorabool & Bacchus Marsh were suggested). A big thank you, to Barwon Valley who went away and did there homework and put their hand up to host the day.

The Workshop is on; Saturday, 30th July at the Barwon Valley Pony Club Grounds, at a cost of $15.00 per person. The workshop is for all Pony Club Instructors, Office Bearers, Parents, Riders and other interested persons. Lunch will be provided and BYO chair and notebook/pencil. Closing date 15th July.

All the paperwork/program is on the Barwon Zone and PCAV Web sites.

We would like clubs to encourage all those eligible to attend.

Inter Zone Teams Horse Trial Championship – for Grade 3 & 4 riders is on the 23rd and 24th July at Werribee Park. Expressions of Interest close; 24th June 2011 and must be sent to Judy Beasley, with the completed Entry Form and money. Riders will be put into Teams and Team Managers nominated.

The Barwon Zone Expression of Interest Form is on the Barwon Zone Web site and Entry Forms and associated paperwork is on the PCAV web site.

Rider Release Forms: On a competition day a Rider Release Form must be filled in if; a rider has a fall during the competition or whilst warming up. It’s.3 the rider’s responsibility to ensure this paperwork is completed. At recent Event (not in Barwon Zone), a rider fell off in the warm-up (just a simple fall) , got back on competed successfully for the rest of the day, only to be eliminated at the end of the day, when someone brought it to the attention of the organisers that she had fallen off, and was subsequently eliminated. Please make sure your rider’s understand that they must be checked and paperwork filled out before they can get back on and finish competing.

Over the past few months I have attended a no. of “k” and “C*” Examining days and an “B” assessment day, as an observer. These days have been organised by Maxene with the help of Central Zone’s Chief Instructor . Riders have been examined and assessed by examiners from both Barwon Zone and outside the Zone. It has certainly made me appreciate the expertise we have within the Zone, and I encourage all clubs to take advantage Maxene’s & Co. – DCI & ZA Panel and use them when you need help/guidance with Instructional & Cert. enquiries/issues. Maxene is responsible for organising examiners and oversees the examining of all Barwon Zone riders.

Reminder to clubs if they have any club issues: their first contact should be the Zone Rep. Instructional & Certificate related - Maxene. not PCAV Office or other Zones personnel.

The new MAD magazine will go out to all PCAV members, in it’s new format, 4 times a year. Clubs need to ensure that PCAV has postal addresses for all their members. Quite a large no. of the Mag’s were returned in the first mail out because PCAV had the residential addresses for member not their postal address. Could club secretaries ensure that PCAV has the correct imformation.

Working with Children checks: Still a little confusion with parents who instructor and get paid etc. PCAV are in the process of seeking Legal advice on some issues that have been raised within the Zone and will get back to us once they receive the relevant information. Senior riders (over the age of 18years) instructing at other clubs; paid or unpaid, must have a Working with Children Card.

Horse Trials: Suggestion , early next year (2012) we run an day/evening for all clubs running Horse Trials; to discuss and cover all the requirements for the day –the related paperwork, formatting the day, jump judges, First Aid, roles and responsibilities, crash crew, scoring, Entries (no’s) etc. etc. It’s obvious these events are well supported by the no. of entries and some clubs have the courses and facilities but have small memberships and/or lack experience within the club to run the event. We could help these clubs and all clubs could benefit by sharing their experiences/thoughts.
