ZONE 33 LED THE WAY IN 2006-07

Congratulations on the best year our Zone has had in Foundation contributions. Great leadership was demonstrated in a majority of the districts. The governors, Foundation chairs and their committee chairs, and Rotarians worked hard for the Foundation and the year-end results certainly indicate these efforts. Your efforts assisted greatly in the Foundation, worldwide, recording the highest level of unrestricted support in the Foundation’s 90 year history and for the first time surpassed $100 million.

Listed below in the newsletter, please review the charts which give specific information on the 13 districts. Noted below are some of the significant results that were achieved by the districts.

Ø  Zone 33 ranked #5 in the world in Annual Giving, and #5 in Per Capita in the world.

Ø  D7770 ranked #1 in the world in Annual Giving, D7600 ranked #36 and D7690 ranked #42. Three of our districts ranked in the top 50 in the world in APF!

Ø  Zone 33’s overall per capita was $131.11. The previous year it was $107.51. This is a 21.95 percent increase and represents $786,757 in APF contributions over the previous year. Note: only 44 percent of the membership gave $100 or more. This low statistic provides an opportunity for great growth in the Zone this year!

Ø  D7690 has 18 100 percent RFSM clubs. This is the largest number of any district in the world.

Ø  Out of 13 districts, 7 districts (7600, 7670, 7680, 7690, 7710, 7720, 7770) had zero non-contributing clubs, and the Zone had only 16 non-contributing clubs, down from 56 for the previous year.

Ø  D7720 experienced the greatest improvement, moving from 6 non-giving clubs in 05-06 to zero non-contributing; this enabled the district to surpass $100 per capita for the first time.

Ø  D7730 had the greatest percentage increase in annual giving (47.3%), followed by D7570 (43.6%).

Ø  D7770 led the Zone with major gifts and major donors, followed by D7570 and D7610.

Ø  D7530 had 6 new major donors, increasing their district total by 50 percent.

Ø  The Zone secured 460 new benefactors led by D7690 with 120.

Ø  The Zone secured 52 new Bequest Society members led by D7770 with 14, followed by D7750 with 8, and D7610 and D7670 with 6 each.

Ø  D7770 led the Zone with 29 new Paul Harris Society Members.

Again, congratulations to all of the governors and their teams. It was a great year and they surely led the way!

Now it is time for this year’s governors and their teams to break the records from the past year. It can be done, and I am aware of some of the efforts going on now to make this another wonderful year in Zone 33.

I encourage each of you to ensure the Trustee goals are implemented in your districts. They are listed for you in the newsletter. Publish them in your newsletters and on your web pages. Governors, as you work in your district this year, share the goals that we all will be trying to accomplish.

Call on the Gift Advisers to assist you with any of your Foundation activities. We have new additions to the Zone Foundation team this year. They are listed with their district assignments on the last page of this newsletter. We are all ready to help you, so please call on us at any time.

Best wishes for a successful Rotary year, and please share our theme, ROTARY SHARES, as we experience another great Rotary year in Zone 33!

Trustees’ Goals for 2007-2008
The goals set by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation for 2007-08 are:
·  Polio Eradication IS realistic – (Polio can be eradicated.)
·  Every Rotarian, Every Year – (A promise to be fulfilled.)
·  Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution – (Peace IS possible.)
·  Reconnecting with The Rotary Foundation Alumni – (Our forgotten assets)

Zone 33 is the home of two major award recipients recognized at the 2007 Rotary International Convention in Salt Lake City.

Past director Ken Morgan of Chapel Hill, NC, received the Rotary Foundation’s International Service Award for a Polio Fee World. The award Ken received recognizes outstanding contributions to the polio eradication effort and to encourage participation in the final eradication efforts. The award is given to Rotarians whose personal active service is noteworthy in the fight to eradicate polio.

Former Ambassador Philip Lader of Charleston, SC, received the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award, the highest distinction the Foundation bestows on its alumni. A former Ambassadorial Scholar, Lader served as the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1997-2001. In addition, Lader worked under President Clinton as the White House deputy chief of staff and assistant as well as deputy director in the Office of Management and Budget. Lader also has served on the boards of several civic, non-profit, and arts and education groups. In receiving the award, Lader said, “It’s a wonderful honor. But I’m really embarrassed, because I know of the contributions of many others more deserving than me.”
