[your organisations] seeks support from [your local member] to reduce child poverty

The NSW Government can take five steps to ensure whatever causes a child to experience poverty, it doesn’t determine their life chances, according to [insert your organisation].

[your organisation] will today meet with [your local MP] to discuss five recommendations outlined as part of the 1 in 7 campaign to make a genuine difference in the life outcomes of children experiencing poverty and disadvantage.

The 1 in 7 campaign is the result of a state-wide consultation with health and community service organisations to tackle persistently high levels of children experiencing poverty.

[Your spokesperson] said in NSW, 13.8 percent of children under the age of 15 are experiencing poverty – a rate higher than any other mainland state. Almost 1 in 7 children live in households below the poverty line.

“Children and young people who experience poverty and disadvantage are more likely to have health and behavioural problems, experience housing and food insecurity, and fall behind at school.

“These childhood experiences have an impact across the entire life course, shaping their employment prospects, their health outcomes and wellbeing.”

[Your spokesperson] said it was time to take action to break the cycle of disadvantage.

“Children need to be healthy, feel safe, secure and connected to their communities. And that means starting in the early years.

“Access to affordable housing, to health services and education services are crucial to ensuring our children flourish. We also know that initiatives to support communities and families prevent harm, and intervene early to give children and young people the support they need.

“Unfortunately, while we know how important all of these things are, funding for prevention and early intervention has eroded, access to affordable housing continues to diminish and education and health services remain out of reach for too many.
