Dear <insert group / business / charity’s name>,

insert your group’s name> have noticed a problem with litter in our local community. We think that littering is a thoughtless, anti-social act carried out by a minority of people and we want to take action to stamp out littering in <insert place name>. We are taking part in the national campaign, Clean Up Scotland, to do our bit to make Scotland the cleanest country in Europe. We’d like to offer you the opportunity of working in partnership with us to tackle litter and help us to challenge the behaviour and attitudes that lead to it.

Whilst 96% of people agree that littering is unacceptable, 1 in 5 Scots still admit to having littered. Combined with flytipping, resolving our litter problem costs £53 million of public money a year, which we think could be better invested in improving our country, rather than cleaning up irresponsible people’s mess.

The Scottish Government released its first national campaign to tackle litter in 2014, providing strategic guidance on how to address litter nationwide. Alongside fines for individuals dropping litter of £80, we think there is no excuse to tolerate litter in our community anymore.

There are a lot of factors that lead to littering, such as the location and the perception of the individual dropping waste. However, we think we can make a difference and want you to support us. We’re planning on having in Clean Up at <insert location> at <insert time> and already have <insert number of people> signed up to volunteer. But that’s just the start of our campaign: we’ll use the Clean Up to find out what the community would like to see happen once the area has been cleaned. We’re planning to keep <insert area name> beautiful for good, and some of the actions we might take are <select appropriate actions from the list: fix or paint street furniture, plant wildflowers for biodiversity, upcycle litter with craft groups, work in partnerships with local businesses to reduce litter>.

We all have the responsibility to keep Scotland clean, green and more sustainable. We thinks that starts here, in <insert area>. We live, work and enjoy ourselves here and we want to make it an area all local people can be proud of. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on how you would like to get involved in improving <insert area> and Scotland’s environment for everyone.

Yours sincerely,
