Your first visit to Howl-A-Day Inn Dog Boarding & Daycare

Doggie daycare can be a very stimulating environment, more than some dogscan handle. For this reason, we screen your dog’s suitability as a pack member and realize that some dogs will be better suited to alternative environments. All dogs must pass a temperament test to assure that they are both dog, and people friendly. It is important for the health and safety of all concerned that the dogs attending daycare do not have aggressive tendencies, show excessive shyness, are toy possessive, are overly protective of territory, or are stressed easily in new situations.

Howl-a-Day Inn believes in the physical and mental benefits of doggie daycare, but we also realize that doggie daycare and The Inn may not be the best option for your pal.

Here are a few things to expect when you get home from your first few visits at daycare and boarding: Your dog will likely drink a lot when arriving back home. We do provide plenty of water during the day, but some dogs enjoy the activity with others more and will forget to drink.

• Exhaustion- All the running, jumping, wrestling, and playing can wear your dog out. It often takes several visits for dogs to learn how to pace themselves. First timers may require a two to three day recovery.

• Sore Muscles- Most dogs are having such a good time, they never stop to rest. Overtime, they will get stronger and in better shape. Your dog may seem stiff and sore after the first few visits. Please let your dog rest.

• Sore Pads- Running and playing with new pals all day can be rough on your dog's feet. The pads may get worn or abraded. This will go away as the pads toughen over time.

• Damp, dirty coats- Your dog will get dirty!!! Depending on the weather your dog’s coat may be just very dusty or may be real dirty. We are out in the country, in a sandy area. Imagine a farm like setting, just without the grass, since we live in the desert.

• Experiences- While some dogs worry about new places and experiences, your dog will be more enthusiastic to enter the group and will grow as they become familiar with the schedule, staff, and other daycare dogs!

Please be aware that minor dog injuries occur at Daycare. Dogs use their mouths and paws to grab at and play with each other and to steal toys from one another. Sometimes this can include a broken collar. They use their teeth to nip and chew each other's cheeks and necks in play. Occasional scrapes, nicks, and even punctures are going to happen. If you are not comfortable with your dog engaging in play and the risks associated with such activity, Daycare is not a good option for your pet. We atHowl-a-Day Inn watch over play time in order to prevent possible disagreements. We think the benefits of doggie Daycare far exceed the downfalls, and that's why we're here. Please help us anticipate and avoid problem dogs and behaviors by informing us of your dog’s behavorial patterns.

Dogs come to Daycare to have fun, but in order to maintain a safe environment, they also need to play by the rules we set for them.

Please be aware that your dog will show different behavior when away from you and the security of home.A dog’s behavior changes when the dog is removed from his pack, his territory and when out of sight of his leader. Its behavior in a new environment often depends on the rank he holds within his pack; therefore some dogs can act shy, and some like to come forward, some won't interact at all.

While appropriate behaviors are reinforced, inappropriate behaviors are disciplined, through the use of time outs or loss of play. By consistently applying these techniques, we can help ensure that every dog has a fun and safe experience while at Daycare.

Please keep in mind:

Not all pets are candidates for doggie Daycare. Some pets do not do well in this environment. Please do not take this personally. This does not mean you have a “bad dog.” Our primary concern is for the well being of our guests by providing a positive environment.

I have read this form and understand the rules and regulations of Howl-a-Day Inn and that there are risks associated with doggie daycare/boarding.

For those who also board their dog with us

  • Please, if you bring your own food, consider bringing more than your dog usually eats at home. Your dog will run and play more during their stay with us and will burn more calories.
  • Food/treats must be in a plastic container, labeled with name of your dog and instructions.
  • Some dogs won’t eat. It could be due to anxiety being away from home in a new, strange environment.
  • We try to make sure that every dog eats and will provide different food (canned, dry, or even cooked chicken and rice) to either mix with yours or feed only.
  • We won’t force feed!
  • Food switching and stress can give your dog an upset stomach. In very strong cases, we will consult our veterinarian.
  • If your dog needs medication, please bring it in a little pill container with detailed instructions.
  • We provide blankets and beds. However, some dogs need their own bedding to feel secure. If you bring bedding or toys, please label all items with your dog’s name. Howl-a-Day Inn does not take any responsibility for shredded, missing blankets /toys.
