NEW YEAR’SRESOLUTIONS

Your contractual New Year resolutions

(with thanks to the NASUWT and reference to the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2008)

NASUWT commends the following resolutions to you as you start 2009:

  1. I will ensure that I get 10% timetabled PPA time. It is my time and can’t be directed by others.
  2. I will not invigilate external examinations (including SATs).
  3. I will ensure there is consultation on the published calendar of meetings and other activities.
  4. I will not input data onto school systems.
  5. I will ensure that my performance management process is a professional dialogue and not just imposed on me.
  6. I will not collate reports or collect money.
  7. I will check my annual pay statement from my employer.
  8. I will ensure that I receive a reasonable amount of Leadership and Management time (if appropriate).
  9. I will not chase pupil absences.
  10. I will apply for Threshold when I reach M6 on the main scale.
  11. I will not undertake subject responsibility or coordinate a subject without a TLR/Leadership spine payment.
  12. Through the above I will have regard to improving my work-life balance in the same way that the school should.

All of the above are your contractual entitlements. NASUWT has not made any of them up: they are all in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2008 (STPCD). There is a copy in your school or it is available on the teachernet website – go to the link and see section 2.

(

There is another resolution which you will need to make in September and that is that, from then, you should only “rarely” do cover. Rarely means teachers will only cover in extreme circumstances. Schools should be planning now for next September so that the “rarely” cover contractual term is put in place. The relevant paragraph from the STPCD reads:-

“Cover for absence is not an effective use of the time of teachers at a school…. Downward pressure on cover should continue, to deliver the objective in the National Agreement that teachers at a school should only rarely cover for absent colleagues.”

You can see that the contractual terms for workload reduction have been put in place (thanks to NASUWT) – the challenge is to deliver them for you. If every member of staff made the resolutions then workload would reduce, teachers would have improved work-life balance and be able to concentrate on teaching; the thing they were trained to do, and on living - enjoying a life outside work.

Go on, spoil yourself and resolve to deliver your contract! Happy New Year!

LGBT, HAS IT A VOICE?

NASUWT believes it should have and is offering a day’s training at the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Centre on Monday February 16th for members interested in LGBT issues as they relate to working in a school.

Issues to be explored and developed are:

Legislation – where we are and how we got here

The role of the union – who to contact and how to take matters further

Barriers to fulfilment at work and how to overcome them

Action in the workplace – how to maintain a safe working environment in your school

The course will be held at the Regional Centre in Rothwell, will start with registration at 9.30 and will be finished by 3pm. The course is free to NASUWT members, travel expenses will be paid and lunch provided. It’s also possible to secure a contribution towards carer costs.

If you’d like a place on the course please contact the Regional Centre at 241 Leeds Road, ROTHWELL, LS26 0GR, or on 0113 201 4600, or by e-mail to

All enquiries will be treated in confidence.
