JOB DESCRIPTION:

Young Persons Support Worker(Part-time)

SASH is a registered charity providing accommodation for homeless young people aged 16-25 in the homes of its volunteer hosts. The charity has operated since 1994 and currently provides an emergency ‘Nightstop’ scheme and longer-term Supported Lodgings accommodation covering York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire.

Job Purpose and Summary

Working under supervision to support vulnerable young people in the homes of Volunteer hosts to overcome their challenges, develop independent living skills, encourage participation in education training and employment, take on the responsibility of adulthood and develop aspirations about their plans for the future.A key element of this role is to take the lead on developing our SASH Active programme of informal learning and cultural activities within the project area.This is a home-based position covering placements in Scarborough and Ryedale.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Caseload:

  • To work with a caseload of young people under the direction of the Project Manager to develop support plans and strategies that help them to achieve independence
  • To ensure young people are making progress and fulfilling objectives on support plans, including implementing disciplinary actions
  • To ensure that young people are provided with access to a variety of informal learning and personal development opportunities
  • To liaise with colleagues and other agencies as appropriate to ensure a multi-agency approach to resolving issues

SASH Active:

  • To develop a range of informal learning and cultural opportunities for SASH Lodgers in the Scarborough and Ryedale area, through building support for the project with local businesses and community groups.
  • To ensure that activities offered are as inclusive and tailored to the needs of all lodgers as much as possible
  • To ensure that participation in SASH Active events is maximised.
  • To liaise with colleagues in other areas to coordinate SASH Active events involving young people from other SASH project areas.
  • To liaise with the Communications Manager to ensure maximum press coverage for SASH Active events.

Project Administration

  • To work with the Finance Coordinator to ensure move-ins, move-ons and financial matters are properly recorded
  • To provide written or verbal updates the progress of the project when required
  • Maintain essential records, including for reporting purposes and to input and maintain information on computer systems
  • To take part in the continual improvement of the project through the application of quality standards
  • To maintain accurate and accountable records of use of petty cash and other young people expenses

General duties

  • To provide out-of-hours coverage for the SASH emergency line on a rota basis.
  • Contribute to the overall development of SASH including assisting with the development of other projects as needed and contribute to the development and implementation of organisational and project-specific policies and procedures as necessary
  • Undertake training and development opportunities as identified in personal development planning.
  • Other duties as may be identified from time to time by the Operations Manager or Director.

Pay and Conditions

This is a part time post for 22.5 hours per week, with hours to be worked as agreed during normal office hours. Some evening and occasional weekend work is required, with time off in lieu being available.

The post has been evaluated at points scale 170-179 in the SASH Job Evaluation System. SASH provides a company pension scheme and will make contributions of 9% of annual gross salary.Holiday entitlement is 25 days per year with additional bank holidays, pro rata and three gratis days over Christmas. A mobile telephone and laptop will be provided for work use. The post is subject to enhanced clearance through the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Qualifications

/
  • A good standard of general education including GCSE equivalents in English and Maths

  • Evidence of relevant on-going professional development

Experience

/
  • Direct work with young people with complex needs in either voluntary or statutory service provision settings
  • Experience of delivering youth focused activities and events

  • Experience of multi-agency working with other voluntary and/or statutory sector organisations

Skills & Abilities

/
  • Knowledge of current issues in housing and homelessness

  • Knowledge of issues affecting young people

  • Ability to enthuse and motivate young people

  • Good IT skills and experience of using Microsoft Office packages.

  • An awareness of Equal Opportunities issues and the ability to translate this into practice

  • Ability to prioritise and manage own workload under supervision

  • Ability to take initiative within defined responsibilities but also able to recognise the limits of autonomy

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
