JOB DESCRIPTION

Title:Young Carers in Secondary Schools – Project Lead

Hours:18.5hrs per week

Office Base:Carers Bucks, Ardenham Court, Oxford Road, Aylesbury, Bucks, HP19 8HT

Duration of Post: Project to run for 1 year

Responsible To: Young Carers Service Manager

Primary Purpose: Toplan and oversee delivery of the Young Carers in Secondary School Project in the Aylesbury Vale.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Promote the Young Carers in Schools Project to secondary schools within Aylesbury Vale and facilitate sign up.
  2. Oversee all practical aspects relating to the delivery of the Young Carers in Schools Project including face-to-face / group work delivery as required.
  3. Communicate with the mainstream Young Carers team in Aylesbury to flag up any issues or cases identified during school visits / group work delivery.
  4. Liaise with Cottesloe schools to support the ongoing production of the Young Carers in Schools Award.
  5. Support sessional staff and any volunteers engaged to facilitate the delivery of the project.
  6. Undertake regular and effective communication with the staff team from the targeted schools.
  7. Facilitate referrals into the Young Carers mainstream service.
  8. Plan and facilitate a Young Carers in Secondary Schools Award event.
  9. Liaise with Carers Bucks Communications Team to update Schools / Professional pages and information on the Young Carers Bucks Website.
  10. Communicate immediately any Child Protection concerns, and participate in professional meetings when appropriate
  11. Maintain accurate records and complete paperwork in line with Carers Bucks policies and guidelines.
  12. Maintain accurate records to enable effective monitoring and the promotion of good practice.
  13. Attend monthly supervision
  14. Attend team meetings
  15. Undertake training as required
  16. Undertake other duties that fall within the remit of the post as requested by the Young Carers Service Manager

Carers Support:

1. Maintain a general understanding of the work of the whole organisation, participating in day to day administrative tasks and attending staff meetings.

2. Participate in joint activities e.g. AGM, National Carers Week, open days and other promotional activities.

3. Provide information and advice to carers by telephone.

4. Contribute to and take part in Continuing Professional Development for all Carers Bucks staff.

5. Contribute towards development of the centres resources and information library for carers.

6. Keep accurate records on all aspects of the work for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

7. Any other duties as reasonably required by Carers Bucks.

Person Specification

Experience/Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience of working directly with children, young people and their families
  • Experience of working in multi-agency groups
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding procedures and processes
  • Be able to prioritise, plan and co-ordinate the delivery of support to young carers in response to need
  • Good spoken and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of office-based ICT (MS Office Professional suite)
  • Able to motivate and support a staff team
  • Able to provide leadership and supervision to staff as individuals and a team
  • Able to chair/lead meetings
  • Able to work both independently and as a team member
  • Able to work positively and co-operatively under pressure and prioritise workload demands
  • Able to work in a variety of situations, with groups or with individuals
  • Understanding of and a sensitive approach towards the situations, needs and difficulties faced by young people and families where there is illness, disability or a substance misuse problem
  • Good presentation skills
  • Willingness to work some contracted hours after school and in the evenings
  • Available to work in the school holidays
  • Willingness to undertake appropriate training

Desirable

  • Experience of working with people with disabilities and their carers
  • Knowledge of Child Protection Procedures
  • Assessment Skills
  • Knowledge of legislation relating to Carers and children’s issues, including Risk assessment and Health and Safety issues.
