Welcome to Advanced Placement Chemistry!! You already have a very good background in basic chemistry from your previous chemistry class, but AP Chem is very different. It is a rigorous course, equivalent to a first-year college chemistry class. Rather than just memorizing how to do particular types of problems, you must instead really understand the chemistry and be able to apply it to all sorts ofsituations. Students who finish AP Chemistry come out with a much better understanding of the world around them. They also come out with a sense of great accomplishment. AP Chemistry is a difficult course and the AP Exam is very challenging, so it is important to start now to prepare.
Like almost all AP courses, AP Chem comes with a summer assignment. We will start over the summer with some basic areas that were covered in the first year course. These topics are covered in Cbapter 2 – 5 in the Heath Chemistry text . You will need to review/ study the material in these chapters and answer completely all of the Review questions on the following pages. Show the work in an organized way for each problem.
Describing Matter Chapter 2 – pg 60 and 71
Chemical Reactions and Equations Chapter 3 - pg. 96 and 111
Molar Relationships Chapter 4 – pg. 135, 141 and 153
Stoichiometry Chapter 5 –pg. `173 and 182
***You also need to learn the names and symbols for the elements in Groups 1,2, 13 – 18 and the Common Ions listed on the inside front cover of the textbook.***
We will be having a quiz on this material in the first week of school. It will be the first grade in AP Chemistry. Bring this assignment and your Heath textbook with you on the first day of school.
I look forward to seeing you in August.
Have a great summer. Look for chemistry in the world around you.
