Students will research a career of their choice. Their thesis statement is English will help me be successful in the field of ______. Students will have to research, record and take notes on their career. They need to know duties, responsibilities, training, education, requirements, salary (math link), benefits, perks, etc. These components will be written in their persuasive essays.

This project is in collaboration with all of your 8th grade teachers. You will notice a component of each of your classes in this project.

Please begin to gather these components for your project. Don’t wait until the last minute. We will be going to the lab and working on these and other assignments in class. Use your time wisely; however, you will be asked to complete the majority of outside of class. Use this sheet as your checklist as you gather your documents. You will turn in this sheet with your project.

I am also working on a “Welcome to the Real World” project for you. The Real World experience involves you being given pretend money, coming up with a budget, buying a pretend house, paying bills, purchasing a car, food, clothes and anything else that you would need to survive the Real World. You will learn check writing, budgeting, economy and many, many more Math and Economic skills-Social Studies link.

Science link-Let’s see how you choose your cars, by efficiency, motion, environmentally friendly or style.

Professional Interview

You will conduct an interview with a professional. While it would be great to actually interview someone in your field, it may not be feasible or possible. If you are not able to interview someone in the field of your choice or a related field, please interview a parent/guardian or adult family member, friend, church member, leader in community, etc. Write their responses in the space provided. Please thank the individual after before and after the interview for their time. These are good oral communication and visual skills. Please use appropriate language, body language and dress when you interview them. Mastering these skills will be vital to securing a job.
