“On behalf of the House, I would like to place on record the demise of Dr Goh Keng Swee, former Deputy Prime Minister, on 14 May 2010.

Dr Goh Keng Swee was elected as a Member of the 1st Legislative Assembly for Kreta Ayer on 30 May 1959 and retained his seat over 5 successive General Elections, until his retirement on 3 December 1984.

Soon after being elected to the 1st Legislative Assembly, Dr Goh was appointed as Singapore’s first Minister for Finance. Over a parliamentary career spanning 25 years, Dr Goh had served the nation in various capacities, holding appointments as Minister for Finance, Minister for Interior and Defence, Minister for Defence, and Minister for Education. He also held the post of Deputy Prime Minister, from 1 March 1973 until his retirement from politics in 1984.

Dr Goh will be especially remembered for his economic contributions to Singapore and in laying the foundations for Singapore’s financial system and defence, soon after our independence. As a Member of Parliament, Dr Goh had made significant impact on parliamentary debates through his intellect, wit and style. His wise counsel and unselfish advice to all who came to his acquaintance, will also be well remembered.

On behalf of this House, I express with great sadness and the deep sense of loss on the passing of Dr Goh Keng Swee. I wish all Members will join me in expressing our deep sympathy and condolence, to the family of the late Dr Goh Keng Swee.
