School Nursing

School nurses are qualified nurses, many with post registration additional training and qualifications, which relates to the health needs of school aged children.

They have specific roles and responsibility for providing care and other health input for:

Individual school aged children

Families

School Communities

The school nursing service aims to work together with children, parents/carers, school staff and other multi-disciplinary organizations to provide a comprehensive, efficient and seamless service which:

  • Helps children keep healthy during their school days and for the rest of their lives
  • Prevents ill health in children
  • Helps children to develop into confident adults
  • Helps children overcome inequality and facilitate better chances and quality of life
  • Supports vulnerable children and children in need
  • Empowers children to start taking responsibility for their own health and well-being
  • Supports children with medical needs
  • Ensures that educational potential is not hampered by unmet health needs

School nurses meet these aims by participating in various activities, such as;

Health promotional activities/ sessions in line with Public Health Agenda and Ceredigion’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy. For example:

Sexual Health

Puberty

Hygiene/ Handwashing

Nutrition

Other roles include:

Liaising with appropriate organizations /agencies

Multidisciplinary

Child Protection work

Health interviews and health screenings

Facilitate and co-ordinate immunizations sessions

Advising school staff on health issues

Education for school staff

Teaching sessions

Providing a drop in service

Providing a confidential texting service for pupils

Practicing effective communication

Home visits

All discussion between parent / carer, child and the school nurse will remain confidential. However, information will be shared with the appropriate agency/professional if the criteria of child protection is met, in accordance with the All Wales Child Protection Procedures.
