Dear Parent/Guardian of a 9th Grade Student:

Your child will be entering high school on August 18, 2008, which is a very exciting time for both you and your child. It is the time when students need a great deal of support and preparation for one of the largest challenges of their lives. Students transitioning from middle to high school are at the greatest risk for problems in the future, both academically and socially.

GadsdenCountySchool District in partnership with the Character Education Initiative office understands the dynamics that young people encounter when making the transition from middle school to high school. With these thoughts in mind, we are hosting a five-day academic enrichment summer camp to ensure that every rising high school freshman (8th grade student promoted to 9th grade) has a smooth transition to avoid unnecessary obstacles on their journey to academic success.

WHAT:STEP-UP Gadsden Academic Enrichment Summer Camp for 9th Graders

WHEN:August 4 – 8, 2008

WHERE:EastGadsdenHigh School

TIME:9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (transportation and lunch will be provided)

Our goal is to have every freshman participate in this camp. Your child will learn the expectations of being a successful high school student. The camp will also teach valuable skills, as well as, allow students to meet their peers who will graduate from high school with them. This will be a fun week, one that your child will never forget!

The Character Education Initiative is a research and evidence-based project. Its goal is to form tomorrow’s leaders today by equipping students to take productive roles in society. Your child will participate in the completion of several surveys. Each survey will take 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Your child’s participation in this research study is completely voluntary and there are no risks to your child as a result of participating. Any and all information provided by your child will be kept confidential.

The camp is free to all participants. Continental breakfast, lunch and transportation will be provided. Please complete and return the Commitment and Parental Consent Form attached. If you do not want your child to participate in the research part of the camp, please check the appropriate line.

We hope to see your child at the summer camp for 9th graders. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Rolanda M. Jackson at (850) 627-9651 ext. 292. We look forward to working with you and your child. . . as we build a brighter future together!

Sincerely,

Reginald C. James
