Nixon County Park Drinking Water Source Display

Final Report

The Final Progress Report:

Include an overall description of the project accomplishments (a), an “evaluation” (b) and a full financial report (c).

  1. Completed the painting of the East Branch Codorus Creek Watershed Mural. The mural contains key features easily recognized by local visitors such as interstate 83, PA route 216, streams, Nixon, Spring Valley and Kain County Parks, Dallastown, Dallastown high school and more. The artist also included other features such as farms, houses, a baseball field, wetlands, a water treatment plant and factories. By including many aspects people will have the opportunity to understand what is part of a watershed.

As part of the project we installed a new water fountain and water meter. The water meter is digital and calculates the daily water usage for the nature center building. The York Water Company donated the water meter, which is valued at $800. As a result of having a water meter we created a text panel detailing what the meter measures. We also created six other informational text panels (see attached page for details of each panel).

The first panel informs readers about the source of our drinking water. Panel two discusses watersheds and what is part of a watershed. The third panel gives information about where water is stored for times of drought. The fourth panel provides knowledge about water conservation. Panel number five lists conservation tips for visitors. The last panel is a diagram detailing the water treatment process. Another project accomplishment is the creation of 30 panels of water facts to be used in our public restrooms.

As a result of the mural and text panels individual visitors, school groups, and families who visit Nixon Park will have the opportunity to learn where their water comes from and how they can conserve water at home.

b. The effectiveness of the display in raising visitor’s awareness, knowledge and

desire to protect their drinking water sources is unknown at this time. With the display just recently completed, staff naturalists will evaluate the results of the display by monitoring comments, encouraging discussion with classroom teachers as well as general park visitors and tracking any requests for additional information.

Describe any continuation of the project that is planned beyond the life of the grant, including what other resources of other funding you have raised.

This display will serve to inform and education visitors to Nixon Park for many years

to come. Because the display is located in a prominent area of the Environmental Education Center nearly all visitors will be exposed to the message to build drinking water source awareness, to promote conservation and to provide ways on how an individual’s actions can make a difference.

This display will touch many youth as in 2007 nearly 8,000-school students (K – college level) visited Nixon Park as part of their classroom curriculum. The display will be incorporated as part of the watershed lesson plans as well as included as part of the self-learning scavenger hunt for the students.

This summer Nixon Park staff and volunteers will be given a tour of the York Water Company treatment plant. This will provide staff and volunteers with more knowledge on water treatment and help to better inform visitors.

Include all materials the project has produced since the interim report as well as press clippings or other items that show the projects impact.

Since the interim report the mural was featured on the local news station. Rob Dixon from ABC channel 27 news interviewed Park Naturalist Amber Carothers and artist Teanna Byerts. (DVD included).

York County Parks Fox Tracks newsletter featured a photograph of the artist working on the display in the May – August 2008 edition.
