2.Electrical Modification

2.1Power Supply Plate

2.1.1Modification details

The Power Supply Plate modification consists of removing the CEM0302G (ARIES Power Cube Assembly) that is not used any more and to replace the Abbott power supply AM50T/5/15-A (PS2) by an Abbott AW50D/15-A. These modifications are required to fulfill power requirements of the new electronics.

2.1.2Mechanical Aspect

The new Abbott power supply is installed at the same location as the old one, as it is slightly smaller, new mounting holes have been drilled into the holding plate.

A terminal bloc (TB5) has been mounted where the CEM0302G box was located, this one serves to bridge the two outputs of the power supply in a bipolar output and to connect remote sense terminals.

2.2Optical Head

2.2.1Modification details

The Optical Head modification consists of removing the major part of the electronics in the instrument and associated computer:

  • SEC0400G Metrology board.
  • SEE0200G Power amplifier board.
  • SEK3100G Servo control board.
  • SEK3200G Communication board.
  • SEK3300G Fiber optic interface.
  • SEK3400G ADC board (2X)
  • SEQ3200G DSP96002 data crunch
  • SEQ3300G PC communication board
  • SEQ3400G 64MB dram extension board

And of replacing it with an actual electronic board set consisting of:

  • SEE0600G High power drive board
  • 0002-11-2-00002-01 Digital control module model -A
  • 0002-07-2-00001-01 Science module model - A (2X)
  • 0002-13-2-00001-01 Metrology module model - A
  • 0002-13-2-00001-01 Temp. sensor & I.D. tag module model - A

Also, the laser and its power supply are actualised to the following components:

  • AA000566-01 L28120AL3747 PS Laser DC 1450Vout 4.5mA
  • 05LHP900 Laser M.G. 4.5mA anode output

Because of the non availability of a compatible RS-485 link on the Digital Control Module, all I/O modules were replaced with their RS-232 counterpart.

  • D1132 Voltage input module 5V=>D1131
  • D1412 RTD 0.00385 100 input module=>D1411
  • D1452 (2X) Thermistor 2252 input module=>D1451

2.2.2Mechanical Aspect

To avoid modifying Optical Head chassis and lower the risk causing pressure leak, some mounting plates were used to adapt new boards to existing holes pattern. The description and schematic of these adapters can be found in MECHANICAL MODIFICATION section.

The laser substitution required a new bracket design as the new one is actually smaller. Once again, you will find related information in MECHANICAL MODIFICATION section.

2.3External Harnessing

2.3.1Modification details

All electrical modifications to external harnessing are listed and explained in the document “BOM-ARIES-0005 ARIES Electrical ICD”.

2.3.2Mechanical Aspect

A bracket is added to hold the new Ethernet connector J125 and the new RS-422 connector J124, see “MECHANICAL MODIFICATION” section for details.

The optical fibers previously used for data communication are completely removed from the system, only the two sealed connectors remain on the Optical Head module. These were plugged with an appropriate SMA cap.
