Parental Support of Juvenile OffendersProject

Undergraduate Researcher Application Form 2015

Project synopsis:Adolescent offenders exist in a broader context; they are not yet mature and are still influenced greatly by their parents. However, the role that parents play in their children’s legal process is largely unstudied. The proposed study will investigate the influences (attitudes, resources, knowledge, cultural barriers) of 400 previously-interviewed mothers of first-time juvenile offenders. Participants will complete a follow-up phone interview to determine attitudes and life experiences related to the justice system. Results will determine how these domains of support affect the probationary success and recidivism of youth after in the years their first offense, and how the parent-child relationship adapts to justice system contact over time. The findings will deepen our understanding of how parental support can bolster success for juvenile offenders overtime, and will have important implications for juvenile justice policy.
