Year 9 Religion Task 1 Term 4

Christianity, sexuality - and the Bible!

In this assessment task you are required to reflect on some questions that Catholics have been discussing for centuries. Using pictures, text and relevant bible quotes try and explain these statements or questions as if you are talking to your best friend.

God uses a neat trick to get round human selfishness - sexuality!

Most of us are pretty self centred! But God overcame our selfish nature in making us male and female. He woos us into giving of ourselves in a way that doesn't come naturally by offering an incentive in the form of strangely beautiful creatures of the opposite sex! It's as if we have to be fooled into love before we are prepared to look outside ourselves to someone else - before realising that giving is as fulfilling as receiving! Sexuality awakens and reawakens the desire to love! We often hear that love is blind! Discuss these statements by talking to and observing your parents and/or grandparents about married life and what adjustments needed to be made at the beginning of their marriage to make life more harmonious then and now. You may choose how you present this information (e.g get someone to help you act out a compromise situation)

Masculine and feminine, in what ways are they different?

The boundaries are blurred between purely masculine and feminine. We are mixtures of each but predominantly one or the other. Create a picture of your fraternal twin of the opposite sex- give them the qualities of that sex predominantly. By brainstorming around the picture in what emotional ways would they be different to you?

When sexual love becomes selfish

Sexual love can find selfish expression. It can have a disproportionate effect on how we conform to Gods' desires. It's a power that can destroy or drive people to great acts of despair and cruelty. The war against Troy was set in motion by an elopement. As Christians we should treat our sexuality like gold - taking care in the way we present ourselves, so our sexuality does not cause others to stumble. Overcoming self in sexual love is supremely difficult but it is most valuable. Of our fleshly desires, Sex is most powerful and has the ability to do most damage when misused. Therefore the rules of sexual conduct have to be strong to preserve communal harmony and stop sex from being destructive. What are the rules God has given us? Can you think of any others that would be appropriate in today’s society? (2 paragraphs)

Now for a really big question.

Why is sexuality such an issue in religion and the world, various religions treat it as evil yet others embrace it. What is it? Good, evil, right, wrong, and why? Most people, seem to view it as a wrong, yet give in to it, and then condemn themselves for there desires. So, if its wrong, why? If not then, why? If something else, then what? (1 page)

  1. Students understand that people come to discover God who calls them; through their human experiences of the universe, including the world around them, and their human heart questionings and yearnings which can only ever be satisfied by their creator.

2.Students understand and give expression to their most basic human heart experiences in the light of the Gospel, through study of their interests, questions, hopes, anxieties, reflections and judgements.

6.Students recognize that every good value, attitude or way of doing things is a sign of God’s presence and influence within culture.
