Student guide to “Me Portfolio”

“What exactly do I need to do?” Read the guide below for detailed instructions on completing each task. If you’re confused make sure you ask your teacher for help!

•Information about your personal learning style.

This task requires you to consider the ways in which you learn best. You will read about the concept of Multiple Intelligence, answer questions on your skills and create a graph.

Consider the graph and answer the following questions:

Which style is your strongest point?

Why do you think this? You will need to discuss examples of tasks that you have performed particularly well in the past and discuss how you will build on these strengths.

What, specifically, will you need to do to improve in the areas that you feel you already do well in?

Also, you will need to consider the areas that you struggle in. What are they? Why do you think you do less well in this area?

What are some strategies you can think of to help you improve?

Look at the posters in our room that have words that make effective learners. Explain why you think these may help you become a better learner and person.

•A word “cloud” of words that describe who you are

Make a list of as many adjectives that describe. Create a word cloud in

Remember to use as many adjectives as possible to describe as many hobbies and aspects of your life as you can think of.

•A collage of important people, places & things

This task requires you to make a visual representation of your life. You can choose photographs or drawings to complete this task and can make it on your computer or by hand. It needs to be one A4 page.

What’s in the box under your bed? Oral presentation

Imagine the scene – you have been vaporised unexpectedly! The only clues we have as to you life, interests, thoughts, beliefs and attitudes are contained in a shoebox.

Try to find a shoebox pretty early on in the project so you can spend time thinking about what’s going to fill it… You can have five items in the box. You willneed to think carefully about your choices, as you have to do two things with the finished box.

  1. Make a 3-minute oral presentation to the class on why you have chosen the objects – you can discuss how 3 objects symbolise you and give the class opportunities to ask about the other items, try to have an interesting explanation for each item. 2. Write about 3 of the items for your portfolio. We will make a video of each presentation to place on your blog!

•An interview with a member of your family - podcast

Using the biography features we have already covered, interview someone in your family.Asking questions well is one of the trickiest aspects of interviewing someone. Often an interview can fail if thought is not put into the best way to find out information ‑ through effective questioning.

Write a draft list of 10 questions and have them approved by me before your interview. Read the questioning tips handed out in class before you start. You can complete this as a podcast or written interview.

•A ‘guide’ to the people you live with.

In this task, you need to describe the following:

Character / hobbies/quirks

Happy (how to make them happy)

Things that will get you into trouble

Warning signs of trouble or bad moods and how to deal with them

What you like most about the people you live with.

Remember that it's important that you express your ideas in a non-offensive way! Be funny but don't make fun of people, if you're not sure leave it out!

•Five Top Fives… You can choose your favourite books, movies, sporting figures, authors, etc. Complete five and place on your blog. You can do this as a PowerPoint or keynote presentation or you may want to use prezi

•Your "soundtrack" Create a soundtrack with 6 songs that represent different stages of your life. Create an artwork/CD cover to accompany your soundtrack.Post the song list and cover to your blog (not the actual songs, this would infringe copyright).OR

•Your theme song (must be original) Instead of a soundtrack – you can use your musical talents to create an original song using an instrument you play and/or garage band

Everything you include in your portfolio should help a complete stranger get to know you.
