Year 6Newsletter – Spring 2018

Welcome back to school after the Christmas holidays. We hope everyone enjoyed lots of seasonal festivities and we’re pleased to see everyone back for the start of a brand new calendar year .

Our learning challenge will be:

  • The Maya. Children will learn about this ancient civilisation and linked to this will be our visit to Cadbury World.

Our Science focus will be the heart and circulatory system for the first half term and light for the second half term.

Literacy

For the first half of the term, we will be looking at historical writing and studying Shakespeare. This will include lots of drama work to explore his style and we will focus particularly on A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Within this, we will then look at playscripts and will change a scene to show how dialogue can advance the action within a text. Finally, as part of our Shakespeare study, children will write a letter in the style of an agony aunt based on characters from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Moving into the second half term, we will read a text called Shadow Forest, which is a story based on mystery, suspense and adventure. We will concentrate on some descriptive writing linked to the action and adventure within the story.

Computingwill be linked to literacy and learning challenge through digitally producing a tourist leaflet about the Maya Civilisation.

Numeracy

Over the next term, children will be learning to:

  • Find equivalences between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
  • Measures (length, weight and capacity)
  • Geometry and statistics – properties of shape and time

Art

Our Art work will be based on The Maya and children will use textiles to make Maya worry dolls.

If you have any queries or questions, we are always available at the end of the school day.
