Year 6 Spring Curriculum Newsletter

Happy New Year Everyone!

We hope that you have had an enjoyable festive break and now, your children are ready for another exciting term.

This term, we will be learning about World War 2, taught across the subjects of the curriculum in order to make the learning as purposeful, exciting and stimulating as possible. We will enhance our topic with a visit to the ‘Britain in the Blitz’ exhibition at Flambards.

We will learn about the main countries that fought during the war and understand why this happened. We will explore ‘The Road to War’ and how the war impacted on people across the world and our country with a focus on the viewpoint of children. We will explore a range of sources of evidence as we piece together the main events and how the war continues to be remembered today. In English, we will use the novel and film of ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’.

READING: Please keep encouraging your children to read at home and to record this daily. The children are awarded super points for reading at home which count towards Reading Karate. Spellings continue to be set every other Monday and these will be practised both in school and at home. Spellings will be sent home via our Reading Records.

TIMES TABLES ROCK STARS: Please continue to encourage your children to practise their tables daily using this online program.

HOMEWORK: Literacy homework will continue to be sent home each week on Thursdays and will be expected back the following Monday. Homework will focus on the Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) element of our Literacy learning. A weekly maths homework will also be set each Thursday and just as last term, this needs to be handed in by the following Monday for us to go through in class.

P.E: The Indoor PE session will be on a Thursday afternoon and the Outdoor PE session will be on Tuesday afternoon. It is an expectation that children will change into a full PE kit for each session including trainers or plimsolls, long hair will need to be tied back and jewellery removed.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Children’s learning will focus on the similarities and differences between different faiths, including Christianity and Judaism.

Thank you for the time and energy you put into supporting your child in this, the penultimate term of their educational journey at primary school. As always, if you have any questions, concerns or thoughts, please speak to us.

Miss James, Mrs Brokenshire and the Y6 Team

Dear Parents and Children,
We have been so impressed at the standard of the homework last term and we can’t wait to see what you produce for this term for our World War 2 topic!
You can present them in any way you chose, e.g. a poster, a piece of (illustrated) writing, a PowerPoint presentation, a movie, a piece of art... it’s up to you. Please ask if you do not have paper and other materials for the activities, or if you get stuck. We will be happy to help and support you!
Finally, please write down any books, websites or other resources that you used: we can then share these with others!

Which leader will you choose? Perhaps you will choose water colours, pastels or charcoal for your portrait. Will it be a leader of an Ally or an Axis Power? / Newspaper Report
Write a newspaper report about a ‘World War II Event’. This could be a battle, an important announcement or a report on rationing. Perhaps your report is based in Falmouth?

Perhaps there’s an aspect of WWII that really interests you – here’s your chance to research this and present your findings in a style of your own choice. We look forward to learning from you! / Write a poem
Your poem can be in any style you choose. It could be a Kenning or a shape poem. It doesn’t have to rhyme.
Your poem could reflect on the feelings of the era such as happiness, fear or sorrow…
