COURSE ORGANISATION:

The English Department will provide photocopied resources and writing note books but each pupil will need the following materials to ensure successful organisation and preparation for two years of examination study:

  • Copies of the texts listed above (these should be covered to make sure they last for 2 years)
  • 2 Ring A4 Lever Arch File
  • Pack of 10 File Dividers
  • Plastic document pockets
  • Highlighters
  • Pens, Pencils, Erasers, Glue, Scissors

PRE-STUDY TASKS:

The English department recommends that all pupils read each text in full before they start the course in September. The pre-study tasks should be completed before the September start, but will be collected as the homework tasks in the first two weeks of the year by your different teachers. Minimum hand-in is 2 pages of writing in YOUR OWN words. Cutting and pasting is not allowed. You must list your references at the end of your research.

Task 1 - Research Questions for Blake:

  1. What historic event marks the beginning of the RomanticAge? What does the word ‘Romantic’ mean in this Literary context?
  2. Victorians were highly moral; explain why this was and what beliefs drove this moral focus.
  3. What was the ‘Industrial Revolution’ and what impact did it have on Britain?
  4. Explain why the Victorian Era began to decline. What inspired the growth of reforms in the Victorian Era?
  5. Why did the English language grow during this time of turmoil and warfare? How did ‘The Romantics’ contribute to this growth and popularity?
  6. What types of literature were popular during the Industrial Revolution?
  7. What is the link between Romanticism and the idea of Nationalism in England during the Industrial Revolution?
  8. In what ways did the events of the Victorian Era influence Blake’s works?

Task 2 – Research Questions for Gatsby:

  1. What historic event marks the beginning of the Roaring 20s? What does the word ‘roaring’ mean?
  2. ‘Flappers’ were popular in the ‘20s; explain why this was and how they changed in the USA over the 20s.
  3. What was the ‘Dawes Plan’ and what impact did it have on the Roaring 20s?
  4. What happened in WWI for the USA? What impact did the end of the war have on the US economy?
  5. Explain why Jazz became more popular. What inspired the growth of Jazz at this time?
  6. Describe the ‘Art Deco’ movement; why was it so popular in the 20s?
  7. What types of literature were popular in the 1920s in the USA?
  8. What event marks the end of the Roaring 20s in the USA?
