9th February 2017

Dear Parent /Carers

Year 10 ‘Making it Happen Day’ to be held at Middlesbrough College

Tuesday 21st February 2017, 9.00am – 3.00pm

In the current economic climate it is becoming increasingly important for our young people to possess the skills that are expected of them during an interview, whether it is for further education or the workplace. Therefore as part of the Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) package within Sacred Heart Secondary we have arranged a Year 10 `Making it Happen Day` in conjunction with the PSHCCE Careers curriculum.

The `Making it Happen Day` will give your son/daughter the opportunity to take part in several workshops and information giving sessions provided by Job Centre Plus, PD Ports, Cleveland Police and Fire Brigade, Tesco, Tad Web Solutions and Middlesbrough College on subjects such as:

  • Employability Skills
  • Challenging Gender Stereotypes
  • Completing Application Forms, CV Writing & Interview Skills
  • Business Sessions such as `Meet the Boss`, `Meet the Apprentice` & `How to be Successful`

As part of the programme each student will participate in a mock interview which will be based on their `first choice` placement for work experience. Students will be required to complete their` Work Experience Application Form` as this will also be assessed as part of the overall interview process. The application form has been e-mailed to your son/daughter on their school e-mail account. Please can you ensure that they bring a completed copy with them on the day.

Each student will be allocated 15 minutes for the interview process. Their interview will last 10 minutes. A 5 minute feedback session will follow and will cover:

  • The quality of their application form
  • Their personal appearance
  • Body language throughout the interview
  • Interview preparation

The interviewer will provide each student with a written feedback sheet which can be retained by the student and used for reference in the future.

It is important that the interview process is as realistic as possible which is why students are asked to attend this day in ‘appropriate interview dress` i.e. smart trousers, white shirt and tie for boys, skirt/trousers and blouse or a dress for girls. Students will be judged on their appearance as well as their application and performance. If any student feels they do not have appropriate attire for the day they must come in full Academy uniform.

Students will be transported to Middlesbrough College following registration at Sacred Heart at 8:40am. The day will close at 2:45pm, all students will be transported back to the Academy and those students who use the Academy transport will still be able to do so. All other students will need to make their own way home as normal.

All students will require a packed lunch for the day as they will not be permitted to purchase food from the college canteen. If your son/daughter is entitled to free school meals and would like a packed lunch to be provided, please complete the slip at the bottom of this letter and return to me, no later than Monday 20th February.

If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours faithfully

Mrs J Wright

CEIAG Advisor & Work Experience Coordinator
