Year 9 Assessment Task 1
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Task: To create a portfolio ofdigitally manipulated images, using Adobe Photoshop, meeting the criteria set out below and then presenting the portfolio within Microsoft PowerPoint.
Outcomes addressed: 5.1.2; 5.2.1; 5.2.3; 5.3.2; 5.5.2; 5.5.3
Assessment Guidelines
Each of the images will be assessed based upon how well they meet the following guidelines:
- Their selection as appropriate images
- The manner in which the changes enhance the image
- Detailed explanation, through an incorporated process diary, of the production steps
- Extra marks will be given to the use of techniques not discussed in class, as this demonstrates initiative and higher cognitive skills
- How well the specific criteria are adhered to
For each image there are clear and detailed criteria that must be met. These are listed below and then addressed again in the marking scheme. Ideally, the changes you make to an image should improve the overall presentation. Once each image is finalized it should be placed in you PowerPoint presentation along with a detailed account of everything that went into the creation of the image. It is often a good idea to include small versions of any original images that have been used in the creation of the final image.
Image 1
Use one of the selection tools to choose pieces of several images and merge them togetherto create a new image, ideally in a seamless manner.
Image 2
Within one photo, use adjustment layers to alter the photo then remove parts of the mask to allow underlying layers through.
Image 3
Select one image and enhance it through the use of the text and shape tools. Once these tools have been utilised add layer effects to the text and shapes. Extra marks are given if you can discover how to warp (distort) the text into different shapes.
Image 4
Create a merged stacked image using at least four photographs. Try to get the edges to line up as well as possible. You may need to use the healing tool, clone stamp, blur tool and smudge tool to help tidy up the photo.
Image 5
Utilising an image of your choosing, attempt to change the colour of part of the image so that it now has a very different look. For ideas visit, and, in their galleries, look at the competition called “Color Blind”. Also make use of the brush tool in some fashion that adds to your image.
Image 6
Create an image with a person or people in it and then make all parts of the person (not their clothes, jewellery, etc.) invisible. For examples of this visit, and, in their galleries, look at the competition called “Invisible World” As an alternative, you may choose a different image and remove everyday objects and leave the people.
Image 7
Create a panorama using at least five photographs. Try to get the edges to line up as well as possible. You may need to use the healing tool, clone stamp, blur tool and smudge tool to help tidy up the photo.
Images 8, 9, 10
Imagine this scenario – you have been selected to exhibit three of your digitally manipulated images in a prestigious gallery. You are out to impress and amaze everyone with your imagination, creativity and technical skill. Create three images that utilize a range of the techniques you have learnt in class (plus any extra ones you may have worked out or read about). Remember, you will probably want to combine several different techniques to achieve a satisfactory image.
PowerPoint Presentation
This is to be saved in your documents folder at the top level (i.e. not in a sub-folder) and it will be called “Photoshop Portfolio – Your Name”. For ‘Your Name’, actually put your name in so that your assignment can be identified.
This task is due by 9am onMonday, the 20thof May.
This is one of your major assessment tasks and, as such, contributes 30% towards your yearly grade.
