Purpose of the work: introduction to historical wind energy use, wind resources and state of the art with WPP in Latvia. Now total capacity of WPP is 22,5 MW. The first wind park Grobina with 33X600 kW direct drive windgenerators was brought into operation in 2002 and was connected to public grid with two 20 kV cable lines.

Paper deals with comparison of three modes of relations between independent producer (20 MW wind park) and state power system regarding to provision reactive power balance on 20 kV busbar. The modes differ in levels of reactive power compensation and control in WPP.

Approach: calculations of energy losses were made in the cables of wind park and in transformers and lines of power system, caused by transfer of reactive power, as well as additional costs of compensation. Real active and reactive power daily graphs of consumers and wind park were used for calculation.

Results and conclusions: paper gives recommendations both for wind park and for power system in regard to reactive power compensations and/or transfer. Method can be used for different situations of WPP and reactive power sources in the grid.
