Maywood Middle School

Mr. Newbold --- 2017-18

Objectives: This class is intended to provide students with knowledge for developing skills in the writing process. Students will be writing narrative, expository, and argumentative paragraphs and essays focusing on ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. Throughout the year students will be exploring the writing process by direct instruction, and working individually as well as in groups. The curriculum will include Step Up To Writing andScholastic Scope as well as other selected resources.

Expectations: Students are expected to follow the Maywood Way and

classroom behavioral guidelines:

Respect: ~ Be respectful to yourself, classmates, and the classroom teacher.

~ Contribute to a positive learning environment by helping others

andnot distracting them.

~ Be patient and wait your turn.

~ Keep an inside voice.

~ Bullying or making fun of others is not tolerated.

Kindness: ~ Help others and include them.

~ Use kind words.

~ Say “please” and “thank you.”

Responsibility: ~ You are responsible for your own learning. Put forth your best effort.

~ Always be prepared with needed materials and schoolwork.

~ Complete assignments in a timely manner.

~ Ask for help if you don’t understand what to do or how to do it.

~ Technology issues are not an excuse for missing work. Think ahead and

resolveproblems before assignments are due.

~ Clean up after yourself.

Safety - ~ Follow all classroom and school rules.

~ Walk, don’t run. Avoid horseplay or other actions that my put yourself or

others in danger.

Discipline: The Maywood Middle School Discipline Policy outlined in the MMS

Student Handbook will be observed in conjunction with the student’s IEP.

Grading: ~ Based on cumulative points earned, weighted as follows:

Assignments = 40%; Tests/Assessments = 40%; Participation = 20%

~ Late work is defined as work submitted after the due date, but will be accepted

two weeks after the original due dateminus 5% each day late beyond IEP

accommodation ( if applicable).

~ Recorded grades are available on Family Access. Any discrepancy can be

discussed with me before or after school.

~ Unexcused absences/tardies will affect your participation grade.
