Writer’s Tool Box- Building on the Drawers Name: ______
As you start to think about your life outside of high school, some of you may know the path you plan to take and the career you plan to land. However, some of you may not have such a clear vision. As Stephen King discusses writing as a toolbox in which you add knowledge to each layer, this assignment will look at the layers in which your life is about to build.
For this assignment, you will use the Ohio Means Jobs website and at least one other source to explore a certain career. Upon recording information on this sheet, you will turn this sheet into a 2-4 minute presentation. More details to come on the presentation/speech later.
Step 1: Get to the website. You can search Ohio Means Jobs or use the link https://jobseeker.k-12.ohiomeansjobs.monster.com/Login.aspx. Upon getting there, click Individuals®K-12 Student® Create your online backpack. Then, create your own profile on this website.
Some oddities: 1. Write down your password, 2. YOU MUST MARK THAT YOU ARE A K12 STUDENT, 3. I do not need to view your backpack, and 4. You can skip the next two pages.
Step 2: Take the Career Cluster Inventory. When you go to your backpack, the first option is to take the Career Clusters Inventory. Take that quiz. At the end, please print page 1 of that assessment.
Step 3: Choose a career to explore. This is the part where we will need to work together. At the top, you will find something called Explore it. Pull drop the down menu and Keyword search for the job you desire. If you want to pursue something in your cluster, click the cluster and then click the Industry Careers link. You will then explore the job itself. Explore and document such information as, but not limited to the following list: job expectations, longevity, travel/expenses, average pay, qualifications needed, degree in college needed, average work load, average work day, etc. Please record your information, along with where you found it, in the below space.
Step 4: Education required. Locate the box titled Typical Education. Please record the type of degree, work experience, and training required to obtain said job.
Step 5: Colleges. Please research at least two colleges to see if they have that program of study. Now, this is the part of the website that I’m not too thrilled with. If you click on Education and Training Options, it will give you a list of some of the Ohio colleges that have this program. Please then go to that college’s website, research those programs and record the types of classes one would have to take for that program.
*A second option for this would be to go to Find It®Career Exploration Resources®College Navigator. This will help you with different states.

Step 6: Works cited. Please write down websites used so you can cite them at a later date.
