Title: Death Penalty: Advocacy for its abolishment.

Thesis Statement: This paper that advocates on the idea of removal of death penalty on a global level as advocated by Pope Frances on his US visit. The majority of people considers it to be inhumane, barbaric and insensitive. The purpose of my paper is to find out the facts and the answers to some of the common questions based on death penalty. So is there a human way to execute our citizens or should we remove the death penalty completely. Finally, and more importantly, as Theologians, what does God’s Word say about the taking of scared life.

Paper Outline:The paper will have following sections-

  • Introduction
  • What is Capital Punishment?
  • Offences Punishable by Death Penalty
  • What role does Death Penalty play?
  • Death Penalty & its status worldwide
  • Pope Frances and Global Abolition of Death Penalty
  • Views of the Church on Death Penalty
  • Biblical reference

Introduction

My idea of introducing the paper involves building up the concept on the basis of the factors and offences that are so severe that require death penalty in return.

What actually Capital Punishment is?

When we are talking about Capital Punishment we are referring to the fact that we are killing the one who has been involved in the offense so sever that costs him his life.

Pope Frances & Global Abolition of Death Penalty

According to Pope Frances, death penalty should be completely done away with. It is the global abolition that will make it successful. The Bible also says that capital punishment was a significant feature in the Old Testament’s justice system.

What role does Death Penalty play?

It is important to understand that death penalty is not necessarily the last option. Capital Punishment is not something that can bring about change easy, however,

In the early years of America fighting for its freedom, public hangings for horse thieves and murders, was done for this very purpose: a deterrent and warning that this will not be tolerated. To date, executions are done behind closed doors and one wonders if the deterrent factor is lost.

Conclusion

I will like to conclude my paper with the fact that death penalty does not guarantee a better world, what it was originally started for, as a deterrents and warning, has lost all meaning. I feel as we have grown in the understanding of Christ’s Words better, all life is precious, and only God, who created all souls, has the right to call home His created souls. The execution of human beings, not matter how heinous the crime they committed, is not our choice and should be abolished.
