>Subject: Thomas Compton - NC
I am researching Thomas Compton, (supposedly my ggggrandfather) born 1750 to 1760, in North Carolina(?). Was a soldier in Revolutionary War under General Green. Married Margaret Greer. Had four sons: Cyrus (a lawyer), John Lee (a farmer), Samuel ( my gggrandfather, migrated to GA and married Rebecca Lamb), Thomas M.(migrated to Missouri), and one daughter, Margaret. One of Samuel's sons is Wilson Young Compton, my ggrandfather. He was born in 1845 in Georgia. Other sons are Robert and Edward. All three served in Civil War in 40th GA regiment. Edward was killed in war. Robert and Wilson Y. moved to Arkansas after war. Wilson married Lou Rebecca Gaines, dau. of Aaron Gaines and Caroline McMullen.
Does anyone know anything about these Comptons? The info about Thomas Compton is from a letter written by his grandson, Thomas Smith Compton, born June 1, 1859, died May 1, 1955.
Any info will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Cindy Compton

Georgia Military Record Book, 1779-1839 in Georgia Dept. of Archives and History lists "Devenport Graves" as a private on the "muster roll of a detachment of cavalry under the command of Captain John W. Compton of Jasper Co. in the service of the State of Georgia, ordered out on the frontier of said county in pursuance of orders from Lieut. Col. Becney Franklin by orders received from his Excellency Peter Early, Commander-in-Chief." The period of service was Nov. 8, 1813 to Nov. 11, 1813. Also on this muster roll was William Graves, private. Davenport Graves was listed as a 1st Sgt. in this same reference from Dec. 4, 1813 to Dec. 22, 1813. He acknowledged pay in full "for services in an expedition conducted by Major General David Adams as Lieut. Dear Larkin:
Was astonished to see the name Larkin Compton as the Old Larkin Compton seemed to play a role in my father’s life. He called him Uncle Larkin.
Enclosed my rough notes you will be pleased with it.
Ebenezer Compton } Biblical names
Aquilla Compton }1790 Census of N.C.
Aquilla sold land in Md & came to Orange Co. N.C. in 1770. Perhaps Ebenezer was a brother.
James and Thomas Compton served in Rev. War from N.C. I would assume they were sons of Ebenezer.
See service record for James in my notes. James sold land in N.C in 1808 & moved to Russel Co. VA. He died there ~ Widow is wife Francis. See my notes. Check Crumptonology in most libraries edited by C.V. Compton years ago.
Please excuse my writing as my eyes are bad. I am now 93 yrs old.
Let me hear from you.

Ck DAR records to see if anyone claimed to membership on James Crumpton.
Hardly think Larkin was a Quaker as I saw the membership of Newberry Meeting House & he was not on it.
