‘Introduction to Coaching Course’

Step 2

9.45am – 4.30pm

This day is open to:

• Younger coaches (suggested minimum age 17 years) who have completed The Introduction To Coaching Step 1 Course within the previous 2 years and have logged details of coaching experience.

C+ Test is recommended as a pre-requisite.

More senior coaches as a refresher within Branches/Centres.

Any Pony Club coaches, as a refresher, who require an accreditation day, in either Areas or Branches/Centres.

• Recommended reading: The Pony Club Manual, Instructor’s Handbook, Instructor’s Folder.

Maximum 8 participants to 2 Coach Tutors

(or can be run with 4 participants and 1 Coach Tutor).

Venue & Equipment Requirements :

A warm room for discussion (flipchart or whiteboard)

A large arena, indoor or outdoor oran enclosed field - with room for two rides to work at the same time and jump. (A smaller arena can be used if there are only 4 participants).

Show jumps or blocks and poles or WH fences

What to bring and wear :

A packed lunch

Notebook and pen

Any useful equipment (props) that you use in your coaching sessions

A Pony Club Manual (please note that this is now available as an e-book) or Instructor’s Handbook.

Dress smartly to coach as your demo riders will have made a big effort to get there!

Demo riders:

2 groups of 4 – (safe and competent D+ - C Test level) - are required am and pm and can be the same groups of riders in the afternoon if parents can stay. Bring a packed lunch.All demo riders should be told that they will be jumping and bring neckstraps (and body protectors, if preferred).

N.B. For 4 participants, only 4 demo riders are required, at the same times.

The organiser needs to match the demo rider level to the participant coach level.

Course Tutors:

A panel coach tutor must be used for the course. This listis held at HQ.

The tutors will provide course handouts, log books and feedback sheets (all available from HQ).

FORMAT / TIMETABLE

9.30 amCoach tutors arrive to set up

9.45 amParticipants arrive

10.00 amPrompt start.Discuss participants’ positive coaching experiences as well as any problems or concerns (flipchart bullet points) and how to deal with these.

Demo riders arrive 11.00am for 11.30am start

4 per group – 8 demo riders – 2 rides of 4

11.00 amParticipants are given a 20 min. coaching topic (and work as a team to plan follow on topics suitable for a rally) up to and including C test level.

Coaching guide: Plan a progressive session workingthrough walk, trot and canter as a warm up and assessment. Progress to trot pole work and then towards jumping 2-3 show jumps. If there is time, include a fun, relevant exercise in the session.

11.15amCoffee break and coach tutor walk round discussion/help with lesson topics. Remember to risk assess your coaching area and set up equipment.

11.30am Coaching sessions. Individual feedback will be given to each participant when their coaching session ends.

1.00pm Lunch with a discussion on morning coaching sessions. Afternoon topics allocated to allow participants to start to plan second session.

Demo riders arrive 2.00pm for 2.30pm start

4 per group – 8 demo riders – 2 rides of 4 (safe and competent)

Same demo riders or new groups

1.45pm Discusslight, balanced seat for using when riding in fields, cross country or when Pony Racing.Discuss and demonstrate (on foot or using equipment) the balance of the rider and pony and the importance of security of the lower leg.

Plan the second coaching session, again working as a team (20 mins each, follow on topics, format as in coaching guide below).

Remember to risk assess your coaching area and set up equipment.

Coaching guide:Plan a progressive session starting with practice of the light, balanced seat in walk, trot and canter and maintaining this through transitions with the help of a neckstrap. Work riders in pairs in light seat in trot, maintaining control and straightness. Teach riders how to bridge the reins. Progress to jumping a single fence in a strong canter.

2.30pm Coaching sessions. Individual feedback will be given to participant when their coaching session ends.

4.00pm Question and answer time. Completion of attendance/feedback sheets.
