OUT OF THIS WORLD HOME LEARNING MATRIX / Y5

This project will run for five weeks. Then we will have eight days in class for you to share your home learning. Your task is to score as many stars as possible by completing a number of the tasks below. You must accumulate a minimum of60 stars. Each week your teacher will be check that you are on track to earn 60 stars.

Remembering Tasks

5 STARS / Create a space glossary. Words you could include are: star, planet, orbit, satellite, comet, asteroid, black hole.
Or create a multiple choice space quiz. / Create a time line of Mankind’s journey into space. Include at least ten events.
Or present information about the 8 planets in a table. / Paint a picture connected to our space theme.

Understanding Tasks

10 STARS

/ Write a leaflet preparing trainee astronauts for life in space. / Create a puzzle which has a space theme, e.g. word search, crossword, tangrams, etc. / Draw a diagram showing the path of Apollo 11 to the moon and back again. Label it so all the information is clear to the reader.

Applying Tasks 15 STARS

/ Produce a mission plan for a manned space mission to the moon. Explain the stages from take-off to re-entry. / Create a set of ten mathematical word problems based on what you know about space. / Make a mobile to show the order of the planets from the sun.

Analysing Tasks

20 STARS

/ Imagine you are an astronaut on the Apollo 13 mission. Write a letter home. / Investigate the temperature ranges of the planets of the solar system. Show you learning in a chart and a graph. / Design and create a poster to advertise trips into space based on Virgin Galactic’s planes.

Creating Tasks

20 STARS / Write a poem based on some aspect of your space learning. How about day and night or the passing of the seasons?
Or write story in which you meet and interact with aliens. / Design and build a space probe to reach the outer solar system. / Create a popup book all about space.

Research is good, but any writing needs to be in your own words! This is very important!

Please prepare a folder to keep any paper based tasks in. Decorate it space style. It is OK to email your teacher any powerpoints, photostoriesetcthat you want to share with the class. However all your home learning must also be printed and stored in the folder. This is your responsibility!
