Dear Parents/Guardians:

Classroom celebrations, reward ceremonies, and other school sponsored activities may serve food and drinks that do not meet federal standards for nutrition only once per month. These dates for the 2014-2015 school year fall on the holiday date each month or on the last day of the month. This year’s dates are as follows:

  • Tuesday, September 30

  • Friday, February 13

  • Friday, October 31

  • Friday, March 27

  • Friday, November 21

  • Thursday, April 30

  • Friday, December 19

  • Friday, May 29

  • Friday, January 30
/
  • Wednesday, June 17

All other celebrations, rewards ceremonies, and school sponsored activities serving food must use compliant foods and drinks, such as those listed below. This includes celebrations taking place prior to school start time and up to 30 minutes after and/or during school hours.

Compliant “snack” foods are foods that meet federal standards and have:

  • No more than 200 calories per individual food/snack item
  • No more than 35% of calories from fat(except nuts, nut butters, seeds, reduced-fat cheese, dried fruit+nut/seed combo)
  • No more than 10% of calories from saturated fat(except reduced-fat cheese, dried fruit+nut/seed combo)
  • No more than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving
  • No more than 35% sugar by weight(except fruit, non-fried veggies, dried fruit+nut/seed combo)
  • No more than 230 milligram of sodium

In addition must

  • Have fruit, vegetable, dairy, protein, or whole grain as the first ingredient
  • OR – contain more than 10% of the DV for calcium or potassium or Vitamin D or dietary fiber

Compliant beveragesinclude:

  • Fruit-based drinks with no less than 50% fruit juice,no added sweeteners and not bigger than 12fl oz
  • Vegetable-based drinks with no less than 50% vegetable juice, no added sweeteners and not bigger than 12fl oz
  • Drinking water with no added sweeteners
  • Milk – Cow’s or goat’s1% fat (unflavored), nonfat (flavored, unflavored)

-Contains Vitamin A&D

-Contains more than 25% of the calcium DV per 8fl oz

-No more than 28 grams of total sugar per 8fl oz

-Not bigger than 12fl oz

  • Non-Dairy milk:

-Nutritionally equivalent to milk

-No more than 28 grams of total sugar per 8fl oz

-No more than 5 grams of fat per 8fl oz

-Not bigger than 12fl oz
