COURSE DESCRIPTION - This course covers the major historical problems of the Second World War in Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. These include the events that led to the origin of the conflict, the rise of dictators, the strategies of the belligerents, the principal military operations, the mobilization of nations and societies for total war, the successes and failures of both the Axis and Allied powers, the Holocaust, the development and use of atomic weapons, and the origins of the Cold War. The student should be able identify the major events that occurred before, during, and after the conflict, appraise the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, and assess the significance and consequences of the confrontation on the postwar world.Access to a computer, the internet and a printer is essential to be successful in this class. You should not be enrolled in this class if you do not have all of these available.

GRADING PROCEDURES – The student’s grade will be based on two parts:

1) quizzes over the PowerPoint lectures and any homework (40%), and 2) classroom activities and projects (60%). Classroom activities and projects include individual projects, partner projects, in-class individual and group activities, journal writings, and any classroom discussion participation. There is a semester/final exam. Seniors with an A average in this class do not have to take the final exam.

PROJECTS – Projects for this class will all be considered long-term with pre-announced deadlines. Projects are therefore due on the assigned date and at the beginning of the class period(see student handbook). The due dates for all projects will be given during the first week of the semester and also can be found on the class website. Students not in school, because of illness or other reasons, will be expected to submit their projects to Turnitin.com no later than 12:00 PM on thedue date. You are strongly encouraged to purchase or use a USB (flash, thumb) drive to save your work in this class. A smart student always saves their work in two locations.

ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS - Attendance in class is obviously mandatory if the student is in attendance at school. Students cutting class will receive a zero for any work, quizzes, or projects occurring in class or due on that day. Students will serve an after-school detention for each cut and the information will be forwarded to an administrator. Tardiness will not be tolerated. Students are expected to be in the classroom when the bell rings. If there is a reason for the student to be tardy, the student must have a note from the office or another staff member excusing them. The first tardy will result in a warning. The second tardy involves a warning with parent notification. Any subsequent tardy will be disciplined by an administrator.

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT – Using another student’s work as your own OR copying material from the internet and using it as your own will not be tolerated. Let me assure you that all work is compared (to other students) and checked to make sure it is NOT plagiarized. Students will have to turn in a classroom copy in addition to a submission toturnitin.com. Appropriate discipline action will be taken according to the student hand book for any plagiarism.

GENERAL CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR –Appropriate behavior is expected from all students. You will also be expected to listen attentively and respect other views that may differ from your own. FOOD AND DRINKS (other than water), AS PER SCHOOL POLICY, WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM. Please keep the classroom clean – use the trash can, not the floor. Push in your seats before you leave the room. Cell phones must be turned off and put away while in this classroom. Any use of a cell phone during a quiz, test or exam will be regardedas an attempt to cheat and result in a zero for that graded activity. Students will be held personally and, if necessary, financially responsible for any damage to school property. The Gahanna-Jefferson School Board approved Code of Student Conduct will be followed in all related situations. This is an elective class. If you would rather eat, socialize or use your cell phone, please drop the class. Disciplining students wastes class time and is extremely annoying, so consequently, students needing behavior modification will be asked to make up the lost class time before or after school (ON THEIR OWN TIME).
