  1. Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Update: Congratulations! Frostburg Community Coalition is the proud recipient of the award grant beginning October 1, 2014.
  1. What does this mean for FCC? $125k each year for 5 years with an opportunity to renew for years 6 through 10. Lyndsey Baker and Ashton Graham are full-time staff personnel for the FCC.
  2. What’s different now? Focus on marijuana in addition to alcohol.

An overview of DFC year 1 is as follows:

  • New Grantee Meeting in Washington D.C. in December for three staff members
  • National Coalition Academy for two staff members—three weeks throughout year 1
  • Development of a Frostburg Community Coalition website (January 2015 launch date)
  • Real-time GIS Mapping website
  • Revival of the MADD, Power of Parents Workshops
  • Law enforcement marijuana summit
  • Coalition Expert Consultant –to be selected
  • AlcoholEdu for Mount Savage and Westmar Middle Schools (8th grade)
  1. New Staff Member: Racheal Myers—Coalition Communications Specialist (MSPF)

Rachael, 2014 FSU graduate, has been hired to assist Liz Medcalf with creating and implementing a communications plan for the FCC. She will be seeking communication outlets, arranging for advertising, maintaining and growing our social media presence, and writing press releases. She will also be assisting to increase the presence of the FCC brand within the community.

  1. MSPF 2nd Annual Symposium: November 19-20, 2014 in Annapolis, MD.

Sponsored by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration, four members of the FCC are invited to attend along with the 24 other Maryland jurisdictions that also receive MSPF funding. The FCC has been asked to provide a poster session during the symposium to give an overview of the activities from the past year. Additionally, the Coalition has been selected to present on our Party Patrol initiatives. Lyndsey, Jesse, and Chris Delaney are planning to attend. Lt. Donahue has been invited to attend and assist during the presentation.

  1. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association (SAMSHA) evaluation due October 10th for MSPF activities for the reporting period April 2014 to September 2014.
  2. Volunteer signup sheets for events: Thank you for your time, help, and support! One more event for fall: Girls Soccer Game on 10/16/2014.
  3. Results of the Community Awareness Assessment—data collected from the FSU Block Party and an athletic event at MRHS. Thank you Ashley Bunting for consolidating the data report!

  1. Upcoming Events and Important Dates:
  1. FSU Homecoming: October 16-19, 2014 Law enforcement patrols: FPD, FSUPD, ACSO
  2. Law Enforcement Awareness Day on FSU campus: October 22, 2014, beginning at 10am. A survivor of the Virginia Tech shootings will be giving two presentations about her experience as a victim.
  3. Bobby Petrocelli: Thursday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m., Lane Center, Manicur Hall. This will be Petrocelli’s 13th appearance at FSU. More than an impaired-driving education event, his program teaches students that 10 seconds can change a life forever.

  1. Coalition member announcements:
  1. Spencer Deakin, Director of the Counseling at FSU, shared an update about AlcoholEdu for incoming freshman.
  2. Chris Delaney discussed the upcoming Allegany County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Council forum to discuss the barriers to seeking substance abuse treatment. Jeff, Jesse, Lyndsey, and Ashton plan to attend the event on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 5pm to 7:30pm. The event is open to the entire community and a catered meal is being served.   3. Don Swogger provided an update about the BURG Peer Education Network and that 19 new students have joined the organization and are working on their certification.
  4. H.B. Martz inquired about the new marijuana decriminalization laws and their impact on university conduct. Jeff advised that because FSU is a drug-free school zone, having any amount of marijuana is a violation of school policy.
