Description

The purpose of this course is to assist students in learning key geographic concepts, and to make sense of our complex and rapidly changing world. The hope is to provide students with a framework to become effective problem solvers and productive citizens of the 21st century.

Course Goals and Student Outcomes

  1. To introduce students to some of the modern world’s major geographic regions—investigating their human and physical characteristics, their assets and liabilities, and their past and possible futures.
  2. To increase appreciation for what geography is a unique discipline which links human societies and their natural environments. Concepts and theories fundamental to the discipline will be illustrated.
  3. To give students the ability to critically examine factors that make one geographic place different from another and to understand why these differences exist.
  4. To identify and critically examine current geographic changes and trends as we move toward an increasingly globally connected world.

Thoughtful class Participation will also help determine your final grade. While attendance is not mandatory, it will help. Active class participation is essential in a discussion-driven course. Plus, students who attend class regularly tend to perform better on assignments and exams. Attendance will be taken every class meeting.

There will be no term papers. However, extra credit “homework assignments” will be accepted. Refer to the handout “Essay Question Assignments.”

Important Information

  • You are expected to read all assigned chapters prior to each class meeting.
  • You are also responsible for any missed material, quizzes, or assignments due to absence.
  • If you are unable to attend a scheduled quiz or exam, you must contact Prof. Doenges prior to the quiz/exam.
  • No cell phones or texting in class.
  • You may bring food and beverages into class, but please leave no garbage behind.
