Pre-AP/AP Commitment Letter

Course Title: ______Teacher ______

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your child has elected to sign up for either a Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) or Advanced Placement (AP) course. We welcome every student who shows an interest in these challenging college preparatory classes and we want parents to be well informed about how these courses will differ from a regular class.

Pre-AP is offered at the 9th, 10th, and some 11th grade levels. The purpose of these classes is to get students ready for AP classes and/or Dual Credit courses. Students and parents should expect these classes to include more rigorous exams with essay questions, nightly reading, homework and projects.

AP is offered at the 11th and 12th grade levels. The purpose of these classes is to get students ready for the AP Exam at the end of the school year. If students do well on the AP Exam/s, they may earn college credit. In AP classes, students will have more rigorous course requirements including more rigorous testing with essay questions, nightly reading, and class projects. In addition, students will be required to take the AP Exam (at no cost to students) at the end of the year.

Our Pre-AP and AP programs are an excellent opportunity for students to become better prepared for college. They will gain knowledge and skills that serve them well once they are in college. Because of the extra rigor involved in these courses, extra points are awarded to students’ grade point averages. However, if students find that they are unable to keep up with the work and are failing at the end of the six weeks, there is an exit plan set up for them.

  • Students who fail (less than 70) the first six week grading period will be moved to a regular class or placed on 6 weeks probation.
  • If a student fails semester one, the student, parent and teacher must conference with me to determine the best course of action for the second semester.

If you have any questions, please call me at 989-1535, or call your student’s counselor at 989-1542. You may also contact your student’s teacher at 989-1500. By signing below, the student and parent/guardian acknowledge receipt of this letter and commit to the requirements of the Pre- AP and AP courses.
