World Map: Connecting Ancient Civilizations

Gaining a holistic perspective of geography is extremely important for understanding the ancient world. This map exercise is designed to show historical and geographic relationships and influences from a global perspective and distinguish the major civilizations that existed and co-existed throughout the ancient world from the world’s first civilization up to the 16th century.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Research and identify the time periods of existence for each of the civilizations on the list below.
  2. Plan and organize your map by organizing the civilizations and time periods (see third column). You must create a legend that organizes the time periods into 4-6 sections categorized by colours (Parameters: organize timeline into 4-6 colours / categories). NOTE: you must create a system that is clear, efficient and organized.
  3. Locate, outline and label the following civilizations and corresponding time periods on the attached map. Make sure you include your Map Legend that specifies the civilization and time period and read over the Map Reminders.

Map Reminders

1.All map symbols are identified in the legend. The legend should be positioned where it does not cover map information. It should be enclosed in a box.

2. Colour symbols are identified in the legend using neat, uniform boxes.

3. Labels are to be uniform in style and lettered horizontally whenever possible.

4. The title is to be the largest label on the map. Whenever possible, it should be positioned near the top of the map.

5. A North arrow is required on all maps.

6.Shading should be light and uniform and should not cover other information shown on the map.
