Era II: Classical Civilizations and Rise of Religious Traditions, 1000 b.c. (b.c.e.) to 500 a.d. (c.e.)

By the end of this unit, students will demonstrate knowledge of ancient Rome from about 700 b.c. (b.c.e.) to 500a.d. (c.e.) in terms of its impact on Western civilization by:

1) assessing the influence of geography on Roman economic, social, and political development.

2) describing Roman mythology and religion.

3) explaining the social structure and role of slavery, significance of citizenship, and the development of democratic features in the government of the Roman Republic.

4) sequencing events leading to Roman military domination of the Mediterranean basin and Western Europe and the spread of Roman culture in these areas.

5) assessing the impact of military conquests on the army, economy, and social structure of Rome.

6) assessing the roles of Julius and Augustus Caesar in the collapse of the Republic and the rise of imperial monarchs.

7) explaining the economic, social, and political impact of the Pax Romana.

8) describing the origin, beliefs, traditions, customs, and spread of Christianity.

9) explaining the development and significance of the Church in the late Roman Empire.

10) listing contributions in art and architecture, technology and science, medicine, literature and history, language, religious institutions, and law.

11) citing the reasons for the decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Objectives:

We will review our most missed mistakes from the Early Rome exam and we will be able to explain the foundations and spread of Christianity.

Closing Task:

Which group of people living in the Roman Empire would Christianity appeal most to? Why? Explain your answer.

Part I – Bell Ringer and Reading Quiz (11 minutes) Individual
As always, we will begin with the Bell Ringer. Remember, keep everything put away EXCEPT for a pencil and the paper you picked up on the way in. After you complete the Bell Ringer (write you name, date, block) you will complete your Reading Quiz on Chapter 6.3. This quiz in closed note, so make sure all of your materials are closed in your backpack.

Part II – Review: Rome Through the Early Empire Exam (20 minutes) Whole Class

Take notes as we discuss the most missed questions on the exam. Circle the correct answers on your exam and write down any information you struggled with so you don’t make the same mistakes in the future. Ask any questions you have about the SAQ as we discuss common mistakes.

Part III – Lecture: The Rise of Christianity (50 minutes) Whole Class

Take notes as we discuss the rise of Christianity. Please ask any questions you may have during the lecture.
