Where did it all begin?

The World Cup has been going on since 1930 when Uruguay won the first final.

The game was played at Rio’s “Maracanã” stadium and nearly 200,000 people were present; a world record for a football match attendance.

But there was a smaller international football tournament that was held around 20 years earlier: It included club sides from around the world and so it was actually the very first ‘World Cup’

Do you have any idea who might have won it?

ClickSlide 21

West Auckland – A lowly, amateur team from a small,coal-mining town in County Durham were asked to take part when the English Football Association refused to enter a professional club.

ClickSlide 22

Completely against the odds, they won the tournament in 1909, beating some of the top teams in the world.

ClickSlide 23

Two years later they were invited back, as champions. They went on to beat the mighty Juventus 6-1 in the final and were awarded the ‘Sir Thomas Lipton trophy’ to keep forever.

ClickSlide 24

Does anyone know which year it was when England won the World Cup?

That’s right; it was in the Summer of 1966.
