Workshop on modelling of PM emissions in different Nordic traffic environments.

Modelling of PM and total particle number concentrations in streets and close to roads is important but difficult. Ketzel et al (2005, attached) has compared different method used in some Nordic countries as well as in Germany. In this workshop we will try to go a step further, by comparing these methods on two data sets. One for Hornsgatan in Stockholm for the year 2000 (or 2004) and the other for Jagtvej in Copenhagen for the year 2003 (or 2004), including complete hourly data for traffic, meteorology, NOx, PM10, PM 2.5 and total particle number concentrations. Data will be available from the NORDIC database ( or sent out directly, if that is preferred. (see list of data below)

The participants in the workshop should use this provided data or other important data from their country and prepare a presentation at the workshop.

In the workshop we will address the following questions:

  • Are these methods for PM emission estimation good enough for the prediction of air quality standards according to the EU legislation.
  • What type of processes do we need to describe in our models and what is missing?
  • Is it possible to “harmonise” on a common Nordic method?
  • Ideas for Nordic corporations and projects

Parameters used in the data sets for the workshop

Hourly data for one year of:

Air quality data both for urban background and in the street:

NOx , NO2, PM10, PM2.5, total particle number concentrations

Meteorology:

Wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, global radiation, precipitation, total cloud cover

Street configuration data:

Defined by the OSPM model.

Height and with of the street canyon, orientation of the street with respect to North, the length of the street from the rec. point to the nearest larger intersection in both directions, lower and upper limits of the wind sectors where the building heights are significant different from the street canyon height.

Traffic data:

Number of light and heavy vehicles (veh/hour), travelling speed of light and heavy vehicles and emissions of NOx from the vehicles in the street (µg/m/s) or typical emission factors of NOx from the vehicles in the street (g/veh km).

Street condition

If some data exist of the humidity of the street this should also be included.
