Workshop Assignment # 1 – Design a Brochure

Delivery Format: CD Brochure

Content Files: Actual Brochure; Some Specific Information about the Company Promoting the Package; Some Specific Information about the Hotels beyond what has been mentioned in the Brochure; a FAQ Page.

File Type: Combination of PDF and HTML pages (no MS Word Files)

You will design a brochure on hotel packages available for a particular destination of your choice. The destination might be inside USA or an international location.

You will conduct a thorough research on the location before putting down the hotels that you choose. The hotels have to be put down with a specific purpose in mind. It might be a specific area in the destination, ratings of the hotels, etc. Please be advised that a brochure serves a major selling purpose and is designed by an agency or authority in an attempt to sell a location as a package. A package might mean that there are multiple attractions besides the hotel itself. This might include shopping, nightlife, gambling, food etc. It is quite possible that all these attractions are available inside or very near the hotel. If this is the case, then all these attractions need to be marketed too.

Although there is no one way to design such a brochure, this brochure might incorporate multiple sections:

  • A brief introduction about the destination / culture / history / as a tourist attraction. How can you reach this destination?
  • Instruct readers about different attractions and facilities located in the destination. Readers should be able to reach a specific location quite easily.
  • Discuss the general services offered in the hotels or around it and how it can be a major selling point for the tourists. You might briefly quote past experience of tourists. Refer to Trip Advisor.
  • Promote major transportation arrangements from and to the destination and also day or overnight tours available from the destination.
  • IMPORTANTLY, try to market a major travel agent, perhaps for whom you are working. Explain briefly how they can help to make the entire process a smooth experience.
  • Make sure you are able to design information in a way that distinguishes information to reach somewhere from information to know about something.
  • Importantly, don’t copy materials from any website or travel website. Write your own text and make your own design. I WOULD NOT ENCOURAGE PLAGIARISM IN ANY FORM.

Normally, a technical writer often uses MS Publisher or MS Word to design a brochure. You can do the same. Then transfer it in the PDF format or start working as a HTML page to start with.

YOU WILL COMPLETE THE FIRST DRAFT IN CLASSPOSITIVELY.DO NOT LEAVE BEFORE YOU ARE DONE WITH THE FIRST DRAFT.

GO HOME, FINISH THE FINAL DRAFT AND GET SOME STRUCTURED FEEDBACK FROM A REPRESENTATIVE IN A TRAVEL ORGANIZATION WHO UNDERTAKES TOURS AND TRAVELS. SUBMIT THE FINAL ASSIGNMENT BY THE END OF NEXT CLASS.

Provide a business card of the person who evaluated your assignment. Once you get his /her feedback, attach a 7-8 lines evaluation summary with the final copy of this assignment.
