This position will perform the following work:

  • Maintain roadways, including ditching, patching, and hauling materials.
  • Repairguardrail, signs, and reflective features.
  • Assist in layout and set-up of traffic control, including setting up signage, manually flagging traffic, and operating attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Perform winter snow and ice removal, including operating snowplows and de-icing equipment.
  • Remove highway debris, including danger tree removal.
  • Control vegetation chemically, manually, and mechanically.
  • Use iPads, computers, and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
  • Visibly demonstrate your commitment to the Department’s safety program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

These in-training positions offer a career path and on-the-job training, and allow you to progress through the Maintenance Technician field, and achieve the goal class of a Maintenance Technician 2. Candidates will be considered for a Maintenance Trainee, Maintenance Technician 1 or Maintenance Technician 2 depending on qualifications.

An ideal candidate at the Maintenance Trainee level will have:

  • Have at least (6) six months of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, truck driving, traffic control, construction, timber operations, or landscaping.
  • A valid driver’s license, with the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) license within first 6 months of employment through our in-house training program.

An ideal candidate at the Maintenance Technician 1 level will have:

  • At least one (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, truck driving, traffic control, construction, timber operations, or landscaping.
  • Valid Class B CDL without air brake restriction with current medical card.

An ideal candidate at the Maintenance Technician 2 level will have:

  • At least two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, truck driving, traffic control, construction, timber operations, or landscaping.
  • Valid Class A CDL with N endorsement without air brake restriction withcurrent medical card.

An ideal candidate at either level will have:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A valid Traffic Control Flagger Card.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a WSDA Pesticide Applicator License.
  • Basic computer skills to communicate and retrieve information.
  • The ability to respond to emergency call outs, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights and weekends), and perform standby duty.
  • Lift and transport up to 50 pounds.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
  • The ability to report to assigned duty stationwithin a 60-minute response time.

Note:

This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
