The Opportunity:

WSDOThas an exciting opportunity for an experienced maintenance professional who has distinct talents in bridge maintenance to serve as the Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead on the Olympic RegionBridge Crew. This experienced technician will lead by example and have a personal commitment to safety while coordinating daily work activities includingpreventative and general maintenance, repairs, and inspectionsof bridges, structures, and highways throughout the region. This individual will play a critical role in ensuringthe safe and efficient movement of goods, services and people.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Lead a region-wide crew in performing journey-level maintenance and repairs of bridges and structures.
  • Build forms, tie steel, and pour concrete to repair deteriorated or traffic damaged columns or bridge rails.
  • Replace deck planks, cross braces, caps, stringers, wheel rails, guardrails, and posts.
  • Perform steel fabrication such as welding, cutting, and heat straightening.
  • Clean bridge members and connections; remove graffiti and debris from bridge piers in the water.
  • Perform routine maintenanceinspections on region-wide bridges.
  • Safely use a wide range of tools such as welders, hoists, grinders, drills, chain saws, torches, and large hydraulic jacks.
  • Travel out of town on per diem up to 50% work schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Lead Technician, OR two (2) years’ experience as a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2,Bridge Maintenance Specialist 3, or Maintenance Mechanic 3 performing bridge work, OR equivalent experience.
  • Journey-level standing in a building trade such as carpentry, steel fabrication, welding or concrete work is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, blue prints, and sketches.
  • Abilitiy to develop preliminary cost estimates for repairs.
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Ability to lead, schedule and train employees while working hands-on with the crew.
  • Ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet, in confined spaces, and in all types of weather.
  • Knowledge and ability to use a computer to for email, word documents, schedules, etc.
  • Ability to report to the Tumwater Maintenance Facility with a 30-minute response time for emergencies.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed, work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callout/standby.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds.

Note:

This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
