Press and Communications Officer

Role Purpose
To promote the work of the Foundation across England and Wales and the charities and projects we support by contributing to the development of collateral, press and social media activity, and undertake and support all internal and external Comms activities as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Communications Manager, to plan, develop and implement strategies to effectively communicate the impact of our grants and initiatives to tackle disadvantage across England and Wales
  • Promote the small and medium-sized charities that we fund, liaising with and supporting them to secure media coverage and to capture information, human stories and photos of their work and the impact achieved
  • Develop and deliver a programme of press activity around both regular grant rounds and specific events and opportunities
  • Form relationships with journalists, and other members of the media, nationally and locally and devisestrategies to identify and target specific audiences and to increase media coverage
  • Provide a core press office function, including being a first point of contact
  • Actively monitor coverage and impact achieved across all media and social media, collating results and presenting reports
  • Work with the Policy and Partnerships team to help interpret and promote their research and national programme funding and campaigning
  • Contribute creative ideas and help with the development of multi-media content, including films, vlogs or graphics for use on Foundation website, blogs or social media to increase engagement with various Foundation audiences
  • Provide Comms resources to support the work of Grant Managers and ensure that external information sources about the Foundation’s grant-making are effective and maintained in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Liaise with staff in Lloyds Banking Group to identify, develop and use opportunities to share and promote the work of the Foundation across the Group and externally in a way that engages and enthuses
  • Work with Communications colleagues on the creation of high quality oral and written communications briefing documents regularly and as required
  • Where required, liaise with external suppliers and co-ordinate the production of communications materials overseeing timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Provide creative and logistical support when planning and delivering Foundation events by coordinating staff, creating appropriate messaging and organising material, including liaising with partners.
  • Work with external partners on cross-organisational projects as required, representing the interests of the Foundation and taking responsibility for our part in Comms working groups
  • Undertake all other duties as may reasonably be required

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
  1. The ideal candidate would have at least three years’experience of working in a busy communications function including specifically within a press office
  2. Experience of developing and implementing strategies across the full range of media and of securing impact and coverage as a result
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, effective at storytelling and copywriting for a range of audiences
  4. Professional manner, excellent negotiating skills and experience in developing effective working relationships, internally and externally, including with journalists
  5. Creative, with knack of exploring and creating interesting angles and approaches to promoting the work of the Foundation
  6. Experience of the writing and production of printed materials, including working with external suppliers
  7. Experience and understanding of effective use of all forms of social media and online communications
  8. Well-developed IT skills including all major programmes and experience of Web Content Management systems and knowledge of HTML
  9. Strong organisational skills, able to manage a number of projects at the same time and deliver to deadlines alongside an excellent attention to detail
  10. Motivated, creative and flexible individual, able to identify, initiate and seize opportunities
  11. Knowledge/experience of the voluntary sector, ideally with charities tackling disadvantage and of working with vulnerable individuals themselves to capture and share stories in an engaging but sensitive manner
