Freehand Drawing Syllabus- Mr. Mulligan

Freehand Drawing is a nine week course which presents the students with a variety of drawing techniques that will improve their drawing skills.

This course is divided into three main sections:

  1. Gesture drawing- sketching the basic forms of the subject without details.
  2. Contour line drawing- drawing the details of all the edges of the subject.
  3. Rendering phase- adding shadow to the subject to give it depth and realism.

Students will be graded on the following assignments: (80% of the Marking Period Grade)

-2 Contour line drawings: one pen and ink drawing of still life and one coloring book. drawing from a photograph.

-Grid method rendering of part of a famous work of art.

-Two pencil-rendered drawings attached to an accordion-folded paper.

-An architectural structure drawn using linear perspective and shaded with stipple.

-A pen and ink drawing from a vacation photo rendered with the hatching method.

-A portrait from a photo, rendered in pencil.

-A surrealistic drawing rendered using the ink wash method.

Written Tests:(10% of marking period grade)

-A mid-term test will be given to assess the students’ ability to use the learned drawing techniques.

-The students are required to take a final written exam, which includes vocabulary for the drawing techniques and demonstration of those techniques. If the student is absent on the day of the exam he must provide a doctor’s note in order to take the exam. (20% of total grade)

Sketchbook assignment: (10% of marking period grade)

-Students will receive grades for five (5) required sketchbook assignments due on five consecutive Fridays. These are intended as homework to encourage the students to continue drawing outside of school. The students are asked, but not required, to use a bound drawing/sketch pad to keep these drawings together. These drawings can be submitted on or before a due date, but will not be accepted after a due date. A list of drawing topics for this assignment will be posted.
