Position Summary: / The candidate will work under the general supervision of the accounting director in collaboration with the director of human resources and in conjunction with other department confidential senior associates to process payroll, assist with LM2 filing and analysis, perform budget and general ledger analysis, audit coordination for AFT and related entities, and act as the technical leader and trainer for finance systems. The candidate will also provide financial information to management during the annual budget process and as needed for personnel decisions that impact the terms and conditions of employment of bargaining unit employees.
Position Responsibilities: /
  • Work with accounting and human resources staff to ensure accurate preparation and disbursement of semi-monthly, bi-weekly and special payroll funds, taxes and reports; monitor payroll and sales tax payments for tax law compliance and accuracy.
  • Statistical analysis of compensation and related data to support internal bargaining efforts of management and leadership.
  • Use expense reimbursement system to review, approve, analyze and run reports and integrations for online expenses, activity reports and projects for AFT and other entities.
  • Monitor and assist in reconciliation ofexpense reimbursement reports for per diem integration to accounting system. Monitor various other integrations.
  • Take on role of subject matter expert on financial systems both existing and new; test and provide feedback to IT and software providers; provide training within the accounting department and to other AFT staff; assist accounting director in project management of system changes.
  • Assist accounting director in day-to-day management of workload related to priorities of disbursements and other functions that support organization initiatives.
  • Create appropriate project numbers and analyze same during the year.
  • Process, analyze andoversee work on annual 1099’sfor AFT and related entities.
  • Assist with LM2 review and coding for monthly review and annual filing.
  • Provide backup for preparation and submission of FEC reports, quarterly COPE committee and national and state solidarity fund reports including any system integrations required.
  • Handle contracts and agreements for lease cars, auto insurance and other insurances as needed.
  • Assist with annual audits for AFT and various related entities.
  • Balance sheet reconciliation support, prepare journal entries as needed, provide assistance for financial reporting, budget analysis.
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned.

Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: /
  • Must have a CPA orbe a CPA candidate.
  • Must have B.S./B.A. in accounting, finance or business or equivalent.
  • Able to maintain a high-level of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Familiarity with standard accounting software is essential; however, experience with GP Dynamics, Workplace, Microsoft programs including Excel and other applications are beneficial.
  • Should possess mathematical aptitude and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage priorities and programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professional and collegial work style with ability to work collaboratively.

Secondary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: /
  • Familiarity with unions or non-profit associations is highly desirable.
