WordQ/SpeakQ Troubleshooting Tips

Problem / Solution
What should I do if I can’t seem to load my WordQ profile on start up? / This sometimes occurs when your netbook has not logged on correctly. Make sure to allow enough time for the wireless in your netbook to connect to the wireless AP (radio) in your school. To do this power on your netbook, wait 15 – 20 seconds and then enter your user name and password.
What should I do if my WordQ profile will not load properly? / Go to your home directory and find the yourname.wdq file in your Home drive. Delete this file. Launch WordQ on your netbook. You will need to create a new profile (preferably with a slightly different name for example yourname2.wdq). You will also need to reload your dictionary!
What should I do if my WordQ is no longer responding and seems to be frozen? / Close WordQ and Microsoft Word. Wait a few seconds and then open WordQ and MS Word (preferably in this order). Click once on the Word document (you should see the cursor begin to flash) and the prediction box should appear.
What should I do if I get numbers instead of letters when using the netbook (Acer) in class? / Hold down the Function and the F11 key at the same time. This turns off the number pad.
What should I do if my WordQ prediction box has disappeared? / Solution 1: On the WordQ menu, check to make sure that the Words box is selected.
Solution 2: Close WordQ and Microsoft Word. Wait a few seconds and then open WordQ and MS Word (preferably in this order). Click once on the Word document (you should see the cursor begin to flash) and the prediction box should appear.
What should I do if the word prediction box is in the way? / The location of the word prediction box can be adjusted by finding Options on the WordQ menu. Under Options find Prediction - you can choose the layout and the position of the list.
What should I do if WordQ reads my text back too quickly? / The speed at which the text is read back can be adjusted by finding Options on the WordQ menu. Under Options find Speech Feedback - you can adjust the volume, the reading speed and the voice.
What should I do if my MS Word files are not saving? / Be sure to use the File – SAVE AS command in MS Word. This will allow you to search and find your Home directory. Save all of your files into your H drive.
What should I do if I scanned a document and WordQ will not read it? / Check to make sure that you have indeed scanned the document into .pdf format. WordQ will not read the text from a scanned image.
What should I do if I visit a webpage and WordQ will not read it? / WordQ is designed to read text and not images. We have found that some sites (especially those that designed in Flash) are not always able to be read by WordQ.
What should I do if my computer logs off or just shuts down? / One of the energy savings strategies the tech dept. has implemented is to turn off the netbooks whenever the lids are closed (or even moved a few degrees away from completely open). Restart the netbook. If the problem continues (and the battery is indeed charged) create a helpdesk ticket for this netbook.
What should I do if SpeakQ is not accurately recording/displaying what I am dictating? / There are two things you can do to help SpeakQ “learn” more about how you pronounce words.
a) Begin by reconfiguring the microphone. This can be done through the Word Q menu. Find Options – Speech Recognition. Click the Configure Microphone button and follow the directions.
b) Spend some additional time training speech. This can be done through the Word Q menu. Find Options – Train Speech. Choose the level you are most comfortable and spend 5 or so minutes training. Be sure that your profile saves as this is how SpeakQ “learns”.
