The “Real Woman” Essay Contest at Dutchtown Middle was inspired by the first “Real Woman” Essay held in Sonoma, California in 1978. This essay led to Woman’s History Month as it is celebrated today.
The rules for our contest were inspired by the Gladys Allen Brigham Community Center in Pittsfield, MA. The Center holds the “Real Women” Essay contest every year.
For nearly a century, Gladys Allen Brigham Community Center has provided guidance, support, and advocacy for girls and their families. As one of Berkshire County’s largest social service organizations, the Brigham Center has touched countless lives through its wide range of programs and services.
From humble beginnings as the Young Women's Home Association in 1911 on Bank Row to our current location at the Gladys Allen Brigham Community Center on East Street, Girls Inc. has grown into the premiere leadership program in Berkshire County for girls and young women. Each year nearly 1,000 girls from 22 towns and at 17 sites take part in our programs. So while our name has changed over the years, our mission of inspiring all girls to be "strong, smart, and bold" has remained.
