WOMEN AND YOUTH EMPOWEREMENT IN BRIQUETTE MAKING AND SELLING: A CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION AND PUBLIC HEALTH CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROJECT IN KAWEMPE DIVISION, KAMPALA UGANDA

BACKGROUND

Pilot International Foundation is a charity arm of Pilot International, whose mission is to support projects which help improve the quality of life of people by promoting the adoption of cleaner and safer environmental practices; Health; Education; Women empowerment and Poverty reduction through responsive economic development that takes into account environmental responsibility in order to contribute to a sustainable future for all communities. Pilot International Foundation in partnership with local change agents (CBOs, local leaders) is implementing a CSR energy project involving mobilization and training of the community to increase the consumption of Briquettes (cooking charcoal made from urban domestic waste). The objective of this project is to empower the community to employ themselves by engaging in the manufacturing of briquettes from domestic waste for their domestic and commercial purposes.

The project has an advantage of integration with clean cook stoves, to ensure a more efficient way of using briquettes. Other project benefits include: It makes use of agricultural waste in the urban areas (food peelings and animal wastes), which in most cases is uncollected by city authorities and therefore poses a menace to public health, water sources and environment; It provides a cheaper cooking energy alternative to charcoal, which is associated with massive deforestation, respiratory problems. A sack of briquettes costs about 40,000/= compared to a sack of charcoal which costs 70,000/=;Briquette is energy efficient, and a cleaner energy source compared to wood charcoal. It mitigates climate change, which would arise as a result of massive deforestation, whereby deforestation is the 2nd major contributor to climate change and global warming; Solves the problem of rampant unemployment in Uganda by engaging people and creating hundreds of Green Jobs to the local population who would contributes to the green economy; It provides a solution to the high energy demand in Uganda, by providing cleaner cooking energy to the population; Highly replicable to other urban centers in Uganda. The project is women led and empowers associations, clubs, NGOs, women and youth groups, religious and academic institutions, local and civic leaders. It is initially carried out in Kawempe Division Kampala district with hopes of spreading to other divisions of Kampala, and later to other towns of Uganda and in East Africa.

Although the project is an act of charity by Pilot International Foundation, Pilot International Foundation needs financial facilitation to carry out its roles in sensitization/training and awareness creation, as well as creating market avenues in the community. We would therefore like to appeal to any funders and partners to support us.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The project is implemented through associations, clubs, CBOs, NGOs, women and youth groups covering the following sections of the people: Local residents, shop attendants, retailers, religious institutions and academic institutions.

MOBILIZATION AND SENSITIZATION STRATEGY BY PILOT INTERNATIONAL:

This approach is designed to serve the local people in their communities.

Pilot International staff initially reaches out to the local leaders, religious leaders and other community leaders in parishes in Kawempe Division, to introduce the project, and request them to announce the project to the communities and mobilize them to participate in sensitization/village meetings.

During the sensitization meetings the project is introduced by Pilot International Foundation together with Green Bio Energy staff to the people. From these sensitization meetings, training groups for Briquette making and sellers of briquettes are identified.

Training is conducted on agreed dates with the training groups. It also provides selling platforms to identified agents and retailers. Pilot International Foundation works alongside to educate about environmental corporate responsibility.

The community mobilization and sensitization outreaches are supplemented by Radio and TV announcements where the budget permits.

PROJECT SCOPE AND PROGRESS:

The project started in November 2012 and will go up to Dec 2014. The mobilization and sensitization program have initially been carried out in Kawempe Division Kampala district and kitezi in Wakiso district.

In Kawempe Division, the program covers parishes both in Kawempe North and Kawempe South constituencies with a total of 1000 people as project participants. In Kawempe North, the following parishes will be covered:Kyebando, Kanyanya, Mpererwe, Komamboga, Kikaya, St. Peters’, Kisaasi Central, Kigoowa, Kawempe 1 and 2, with 1000 people participating.
